Fantasy MLS: Week 17

The Gold Cup is over and all players will be returning to their club teams this week from international duty. New York is especially glad to see their players return after being without their starting center backs for the duration of the tournament.

However, Rafa Marquez was injured in the Gold Cup final and will not be able to play this week. It has not been determined how long the Mexican captain will be out for.

Here are a few more items to consider before setting your fantasy lineup this week:

FANTASY MLS WEEK 17 BEST XI

GK – Nick Rimando, RSL – Rimando has a home game vs. a New England side that has really struggled offensively. Real Salt Lake boasts the best defense in the league and should be able to contain the New England attack.

D –Kosuke Kimura, COL – Colorado’s defense got exposed last week vs. Columbus. But a home game vs. a Houston team that will likely be without Brad Davis, who was injured last week, should get them back on track.

D – Nat Borchers, RSL – Tallied his first goal of the season last week and will be a threat for weeks to come.

D –Zach Loyd, DAL – FC Dallas has really hit a stride since the resurgence of Brek Shea in their attack. Loyd is always contributing from the back and has a great chance to pick up fantasy points with a home game vs. Columbus.

M – Dwayne DeRosario, DC – DeRosario had a breakout game in his first game for New York and should perform well in his first game with DC United as well. He will be playing an advanced roll with plenty opportunities to score.

M – Brek Shea, DAL – Seven goals and one assists on the season, is a must start for any fantasy team with the form he is in.

M –Jamie Smith, COL – Had a very strong start to the season but has failed to produce as of late. Smith has a good chance to put up strong fantasy stats with a home game vs. Houston.

M – Landon Donovan, LA –He has eight goals and one assist on the season. If you dropped him while he was playing in the Gold Cup, it would be a good idea to pick him back up.

F – Charlie Davies, DC – Davies also has eight goals and one assist on the season. With a home game vs. Philadelphia, he should have a good chance to improve on those stats.

F – Alvaro Sabario, RSL – After a very poor run of form to start the season, Sabario scored a brace in RSL’s 3-1 win over Toronto last week. This is very promising for the Costa Rican forward who had a break-out season last year.

F – Kenny Cooper, POR – Has not been the same goal threat for Portland as he was for Dallas a few years back. However, Cooper is still a big target up top and should get his chances vs. a Kansas City team that has been known to leak goals on the road.

INJURY WATCH

Luke Rodgers did not play last week and he is listed as ‘Doubtful’ in the injury report for this week. Conor Casey received a red card in last week’s game and will be suspended for Colorado’s game vs. Houston. Fabian Espindola is listed as ‘Questionable,’ Sabario is a good replacement for Espindola if he is on your fantasy team. For other injury news, check out the most updated MLS injury report. The deadline for Week 17 is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET. Be sure to change your lineups by then.

  1. not sure i agree with all the DC love. phillys defense has been pretty strong this year. should be a fun rivalry game anyway.

  2. Aurelien Collin (KC) has shut out big dogs Lenhart and Hassli in back to back games. I wouldn’t put Cooper on your fantasy team this week.

And oh by the way, KC has only allowed 3 goals in their last 5 road games, so they aren’t exactly leaking goals anymore……
