This Weekend's Soccer on TV

While one U.S. national team is fighting for a Gold Cup title, another one starts its quest for a World Cup crown.

The U.S. Under-17 men's national team begins its FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico as it takes on the Czech Republic on Sunday. Conveniently for U.S. soccer fans, that match is slated to begin a little while after the U.S. senior side takes on Jamaica in a Gold Cup quarterfinal.

Those matches highlight a slate chock-full of international action, as the Gold Cup, UEFA U-21 championships and U-17 World Cup all happen simultaenously this weekend.

As for some of the better MLS matches on the schedule, Colorado-Los Angeles and Chivas USA-FC Dallas are two headliners to watch Saturday night, while Portland looks to find its Jeld-Wen mojo again when it hosts the New York Red Bulls Sunday night.

Ives has come out with his odds: 5/1 US to win it all, 2/1 Mexico to win it all. Check out his piece on foxsoccer.

u never know…remember how awesome Argentina looked during the past world cup blowing out all their opponents in the group stages? In the end, Argentina got blasted by Germany and nobody put their money on that bet except for me of course…LoL

Any idea why UEFA is running a U21 championship in the same summer as the FIFA U20 WC? Does UEFA not respect the FIFA U20 WC? Just politics? Do clubs typically let their players go to just one of these in the summer (if they are eligible and good enough for both)?

I think it has more to do with the fact that it’s the FIFA U-17 WC and the UEFA U-21 title. Big difference. Like about 4 years. UEFA has to run it some time. It can’t be next year when the actual UEFA crown next year.

  • BWH

UEFA runs the U21 tournament every other year on odd number years so players have time to develop before getting called up to the senior team for the World Cup or Euro championship.

It also looks like only England and Spain are competing in both tournaments. I imagine both of those nations have enough U21/U20 players to form two competitive rosters.
