SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: C.J. Sapong

Sporting Kansas City has a deep stable of forwards, including stars like Omar Bravo, and established veterans like Kei Kamara, but rookie C.J. Sapong continues to state his case as having the best year among the group.

Sapong added to his strong MLS Rookie of the Year candidacy by notching a goal and assist in Sporting KC's 2-1 win against Portland, a performance that helped him earn SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors this week.

Sapong beat out fellow rookies Darlington Nagbe of Portland, Kof Sarkodie of Houston and Jalil Anibaba of Chicago for this week's top honors. Nagbe scored what was easily the best goal of the season by a rookie in MLS, but Sapong's overall performance gave him the nod.

What did you think of Sapong's performance? What rookie impressed you the most this past match-week?

  1. no you’re not, and good call. CJ is good, physically gifted, shows some skills too. if he keeps hungry, keeps growing, who knows how he might develop. it would be great to see him earn a call up through consistantly superior performance

  2. Hmmmm….it seems like just yesterday I was reading somewhere:

    Sporting Kansas City

C.J. Sapong had a decent MLS Combine, but for K.C. to take him ahead of the likes of Will Bruin and Corey Hertzog could wind up going down as one of the worst decisions in this draft.

Lesson here: No pundit knows nearly enough about the players available in any MLS draft to make overly definitive statements!

  3. a few days ago I left a comment listing young american MLS talent that I thought had a chance of making an impact at the USMNT level…and somebody ridiculed my selection of Sapong as “you’re crazy”…

    Am I still crazy?

  4. Oh please. He’s a really good guy. I’ve met him personally.

Someone celebrating a goal that took place in front of the supporters? Welcome to MLS.

  5. Charles has been making a name for himself. Bob gives looks to tons of players, if he keeps it up he will get one.

I haven’t seen much of either of them, but how do Jalil Anibaba and AJ Soares look at CB? We need help badley there.

  6. Usually wary to propose players for USMNT call-ups with a small sample size, but CJ has continued to develop rapidly and shows surprising skill with the ball at his feet. He’s a beast physically and is young enough to develop in our player pool. If he keeps starting and playing well, would love to see him in the friendly against Costa Rica.
