Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

MessiArgentina (Reuters)

After unloading on Costa Rica in its final group stage match, Argentina heads into the knock-out rounds of Copa American looking like a team capable of winning the trophy.

The first step in the knockout rounds will pit the 'Albiceleste' against Uruguay, the fourth-place finishers in the 2010 World Cup. Led by Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, Uruguay finished in second place in its group, just as Argentina did.

MLS will be in full swing as well, with seven matches on the slate. The Seattle Sounders take on the Colorado Rapids in their first meeting since Brian Mullan's leg-breaking tackle on Steve Zakuani, while FC Dallas plays host to D.C. United in another promising match-up. The World Football Challenge will give us the highly-anticipated rematch of Real Madrid against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

  1. You don’t criticize your teammates in an interview with a reporter. If he wants to be part of the team, then he should start acting like it.

  2. On paper Argentina is a superior team to Uruguay. But Argentina was completely brutal at this Copa America. They were never impressive, and at times looked downright terrible. Uruguay, Peru, and Venezuela have all played better soccer than Argentina in this tournament.

  3. It was a good game as a neutral i really enjoyed it. As for the media they will always do that for their team. I watched the world cup on bbc & b4 the match they said nobody on germany’s whole squad could start on england. LOL yeah we saw how that turned out.

  4. Congrats to Uruguay…!!! This is the best day ever. Argentina loses… in a fantastic game. Everyday they were reporting from B.A. how Argentina had the best team with the best players and guess what?… They LOST…!! AWESOME…!!

  5. And there goes Mascherano with yellow #2. Didn’t see any malice but he blundered into the Uruguay player from behind. Now 10 v. 10

Some great chances this half for both sides. Forlan has been excellent coming back deeper t get the ball and spring counterattacks.

  6. Games are certainly fun to watch… outside of the music over the PA during the game in places like where the hammerheads play.

  7. I’m not going to lie but I’ve been suprised at the level of talent on usl and nasl teams. Maybe mls should scout this league instead of wasting money on players like koke’s b***h @$$.

  8. Diego Perez with a stupidprofessional foul to thwart a potential Argentina counterattack. Foul itself, while not nasty, did impede Gago (?) and Perez had been racking up chippy fouls pretty much all match. Uruguay playing quite physical and now things set up for Argentina to make them pay.

  9. I’m thinking part of it is simply right now, Columbia has a surplus of quality forwards (including Montero IMO) like Falcao, Rodallega, and others playing in Mexico and Europe, so Freddy may be down in the pecking order.

Wonder if he was considered and not called in due to his being temporarily relegated to subs bench (for a few games I think)?

  10. I’ve often wondered why Freddy Montero has only made 4 appearances for the Columbian National team. Seems they could use a goal scorer. Anyone with any insight.

  11. How do we know Castillo would have done better? He has more speed and he has skill on the ball.

Bornstein has speed, but lacks soccer I.Q. and has no ball skills.

  12. The Revs blocked Joseph’s attempts to get over there, teams were interested but they wouldn’t let him go. I think a lot of his problems over the last year stemmed from his frustration at not getting a shot at Europe.

  13. That is classless by Castillo. The guy needs to shut up and perform for his club. He’ll get his chance, but talking trash on other US players does not impress me.

  14. Thirty seconds and there’s already a yellow card issued to peru. A minute later a good chance for Colombia. Promising start!
