Tuesday Kickoff: Corinthians eyes Tevez, Red Bulls’ Open Cup plan and more

Carlos Tevez could be returning to Corinthians.

According to reports out of England, the Brazilian power has made Manchester City a £35 million offer for the Argentine forward, who played there from 2004-2006 prior to joining the Premier League.

Tevez' departure from Manchester City seems to be a certainty, but a major team in Europe was expected to be his next destination. Instead, Tevez, who scored 21 goals in league play for Manchester City last season and helped lead the team to the FA Cup, could make a return to his native South America.

Here are a few more stories to kick off your Tuesday:

RED BULLS TO FIELD RESERVES IN USOC

The U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals commence Tuesday night, and if the New York Red Bulls are to progress, they'll have to do so with a reserve-heavy squad.

The New York Post reports that the Red Bulls will field mostly reserves against the Chicago Fire, with Mehdi Ballouchy being the lone starter in the mix. Chris Albright is expected to make his return from injury for New York.

The Red Bulls play in Chicago at 8:30 p.m., with a live stream provided on the Fire's website. Other Open Cup quarterfinals Tuesday include Sporting Kansas City hosting the Richmond Kickers and FC Dallas hosting Real Salt Lake.

The Seattle Sounders play the Los Angeles Galaxy in the final quarterfinal on Wednesday night.

ADLER NEEDS SURGERY

Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler is slated to have knee surgery for an injury to a tendon on Wednesday and is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season.

The news benefits American goalkeeper David Yelldell, who just signed with Leverkusen as the club's backup after starting for 2. Bundesliga side MSV Duisburg last season.

MANCHESTER CITY'S SUMMER TOUR ROSTER

Manchester City is set to play Club America, the Vancouver Whitecaps and Los Angeles Galaxy in the World Football Challenege over the coming weeks. Here's who the Citizens brought to North America for the games:

GOALKEEPERS – Joe Hart, Stuart Taylor, Eirik Johansen, Loris Karius.

DEFENDERS – Micah Richards, Jerome Boateng, Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott, Dedryck Boyata, Gael Clichy, Aleksandar Kolarov, Stefan Savic, Frederic Veseli.

  1. The Galaxy have Birchall who has no problem taking out anyone! Just ask Nyarko. Lookin’ forward to the Man City match on the 24th! I just hope De Jong doesn’t try to hurt Becks or Donovan, otherwise I might find myself on the field giving him a swift kick to the face. LOL.

  2. I must say if Corinthians can make a bid for Tevez, why cant a MLS club do the same? Red Bulls and Galaxy are set, so the one club I think that should bring him in would be Chivas USA. The club needs all the help they can get and the Guadalajara brace and sponsors plus MLS would deffently have the money to bring him to the League. Im not a Chivas fan, but that would be the biggest move in MLS history. I will say I wouldnt care what team got him, other then DC and Philly. LETS SEE IT MLS!!

  3. More specifically, winning the East so they can get knocked out of the first playoff round by a bottom feeding Western conference team.

  4. I agree somewhat, Tevez carried a heavy load for City and will not be easily replaced. They would need someone like Eto’o, but I don’t think that is going to happen.

And about Sneijder, he will never go to Man U so keep dreaming.

  5. for all you ignorant “euro minded” folk, dont forget that Corinthians paid 15 mil for Tevez back in 05. the bad thing though, is that Timao wont be able to showcase Tevez in an upcoming international tournament since they didnt qualify for 2012 copa lib or copa sudamericana

  6. speaking of CCL, can concacaf invite two s. american teams to CCL? pay them half of a mil to play. i’m thinking of corinthians and boca since neither made it to either next yr’s copa lib or copa sudamericana. please concacaf, buy those brand names for your competition…provide planes for them

  7. cant a friendly be arranged w/netherlads? yes, i know i misspelled it. anyway, i think Mullan would be number one choice by americans for bob to call up in such friendly. i’d certainly watch to see how one hothead goes after another

  8. Watched Red Bulls go out to Harrisburg last summer. Great night! Too bad Rochester already eliminated the City Islanders this year.

  9. I would guess the sky is the limit. If Adler misses most of the preseason prep (which looks likely) and Yelldell can impress, there’s a slim chance he could keep the spot.

  10. +1 for a nice summary. I’m not sure how long these sponsoring companies will keep ponying up the cash, but it’s really helping the Brazilian league right now.

BTW, those people wishing for more information on S. American soccer should look up Tim Vickery’s blog on the BBC.

  11. Yeah, they really looked like they picked up the pace against DC. Just one excuse after another with this team; int. duty, injuries, schd. congestion, blah blah. Funny how it’s not hurting LA. 6 wins in 20 games is a joke for this roster.

  12. What is winning the east going to do for them? They could have rested most of the starters Sat night (they lost anyway!) and put out a strong squad tonight against a very beatable team. They don’t play again until Sat. I can understand putting out scrubs in the early rounds, and if you get knocked out, so be it. But to get this far, knowing you aren’t winning the supporters shield, and the playoffs are a crap-shoot, and not try to win is pathetic. I hope they win tonight and Hans HAS to put out a better squad for the semis or the fans will be calling for his head on a platter!

  13. New York has no depth. Too much money into the A team.

Maybe Backe doesn’t realize that winning the Open Cup gets you a CCL berth? No other explanation. Why would you put a friendly over Champions League qualifiers?

  14. No sure I’d call a playoff spot ‘locked up’ seems pretty likely that three teams from the East will make it. Seven points separated first and sixth, and nyrb has played more matches than any of those teams. (DC, for instance, is in fourth, 6 points back with two games in hand.

  15. Priorities.

Some of that fixture congestion is friendies, no? That’s on the Red Bulls since they schedule this stuff. If more starters play in the friendly, your defense goes out the window.

  16. Most of the teams in europe are also on the verge of bankruptcy. The brazilian league has seen an influx of cash from sponsors who have benefitted from globalization. I’m sure a lot of sponsorship money is involved with the bid, as is the case in neymars new deal, robinhos loan deal last season, luis fabianos deal, ronaldos deal, adrianos deal, etc. Corinthians is a big proponent of nike, so much so that flamengo dropped their nike affiliation after it was posited that the relationship was a prime factor in where ronaldo landed. Tevez absolutely came into his own and dominated the league when he was just starting to develop for corinthians so its worth it

  17. not saying his coaching is perfect but its tough when most of your dependable players are away on nat duty or injured. i think the team will pick up the pace again now that most of the team is back.

beyond da luz and agudelo off of the bench im not sure who can be subbed in that can perform at the same level as those guys on the pitch.

only major bone i have to pick with backe is his decision to start ballouchy over da luz on the left wing. da luz did really well last month.

  18. Before anyone criticizes the Red Bulls, please remember that they have NINE matches in the month of July, plus the All-Star game, plus a trip across the Atlantic to play two matches in London. You can’t focus on everything, and right now the focus is on winning the East.

  19. Backe doesn’t control the schedule, but he can control whether he uses his 3rd substitution in a blowout. Still can’t figure out why he didn’t rest somebody for the DC game.

  20. agreed. the red bulls looked tired against DC. is the schedule congestion backe’s fault? everyone needs to calm down, this decision makes sense.

that being said any game ballouchy starts in we are sure to lose. hopefully im wrong tonight!

  21. The Red Bulls just played Saturday Wednesday Saturday last week, and looked tired playing against DC, so I don’t think they’d do much better on another short turnaround. I would have liked to see Tainio, though, considering he missed the weekend game.

  22. I dunno. Brasil is about the size of the US and they care about nothing but soccer, I can definitely see their top three or four teams paying elite money. I would guess one of the main problems is convincing stars to play in Brazil instead of England, Spain, and the Champions League.

  23. Backe only uses the same 12-13 players for MLS matches when everyone is avail, so they dont have the legs for USOC.

    totally disappointed.

  24. Come on Hans, play the starters! I’m tired of 16 years and no cups… Even two girls had one cup for cryin’ out loud!

  25. that seems shockingly high to me. Unless they have recently sold a bunch of brazilian starlets over the last few years.

35 million pounds is top top euro level spending. Just dont see them having that kind of cash avail.

  26. This kind of decision making is why NY’s trophy case is empty after 15 years in the league. In contrast, Seattle has two trophies to go with its first two years in the league. I’m far from a Seattle fan, but I like how they and their supporters have embraced history and the big fun of the Open Cup. Play your reserves in the early rounds, but when you start facing MLS competition in the later rounds, bring your A team. Means a lot more than regular season MLS games, unless you’re fighting for a playoff spot (which NY has pretty much locked up).

  27. Don’t know about S. America much but do most Brasil league teams have that kind of cash? I mean damn 35 million pounds is a lot.

  28. That sucks and I’m a Fire fan. I wanted to see how my Fire did going up against the Red Bulls in this game, whenever its the US Open Cup, the Fire come to play because we really value this tourney. I’m not going to complain to much though because I’d love to see the Fire in the Champions League next year if we make some moves in this transfer window to get better for the rest of this year and next year.

  29. Disappointing decision by New York. It’s the quarterfinals against an MLS team! The US Open Cup still has LA, RSL, Dallas, Seattle, and New York. It’s all the best teams and should be exciting.

  30. Rest players in a knockout tournament for a regular season that means absolutely nothing? It’s not like they won’t make the playoffs. Why not rest players on long road trips like they did against San Jose? I had no idea Chris Albright was still in the league.

  31. When Tevez leaves, City are definitely not title contenders. Not even close. It’s not easy to come by a striker who will light up the EPL like Tevez did when he came to City. Dzeko and Balotelli are not going to make up for his goal scoring rate. As a United fan, this pleases me immensely. All United needs is Sneijder, and they’re set for the next five years or so…
