DaMarcus Beasley's renaissance continued on Sunday, as he did something for Puebla that he has not done in an official game in nearly two years: he scored a goal.

Earning his sixth start for the club in as many games, Beasley netted the game-winner in Puebla's 2-1 triumph versus Pumas UNAM. The goal, which came off a strong header, was Beasley's first since he scored for Rangers back on December 19, 2009. The U.S. men's national team midfielder also helped set up Puebla's first goal in his strong 90-minute outing, drawing a foul before the ensuing free kick found the back of the net.

Jozy Altidore also enjoyed a good day at the office, earning his first start, going the distance and scoring two goals in AZ Alkmaar's 4-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen. Altidore netted the winner off a header before finishing with a left-footed, one-timed shot that was well placed. Altidore now has three goals on the season.

New American Abroad Fabian Johnson, who just announced he'd be open to switching allegiances and playing for the United States, started his third game for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and he made quite an impact. Johnson, who is capable of playing left back, assisted on the winning goal and drew a penalty kick that was converted by a teammate in Hoffenheim's 2-0 win against FC Augsburg.

What do you think of these performances? Surprised Beasley is thriving in Mexico? How many goals do you see Altidore scoring this season? Hoping Johnson is called into one of the upcoming U.S. men's national team friendlies?

  1. Biggest improvements? Beasley, Sasha and Jozy. Good for them.

Bradley, Lichaj, Gooch and Jones need to figure their S out because they should be playing every weekend.

Gomez should absolutely be called into the next camp. Starikov and Mixx should too.

    Acuna is a moron.

Johnson and Williams could be good additions for depth.

Chandler needs to be capped in an official game!

  2. Yo, why didn’t Beasley get a run out in the last USMNT game against Mexico? I know he was called in, did he get hurt in training or something because i didnt even see him on the bench when they showed clips of the bench during the game! He’s ben playing well since his move to the mexican league and i feel he can still contribute to the NATS if he stays healthy and in form!

  3. Actually I thought it was pretty terrible. Beyond Beasley and Jozy, most of our boys had really bad weeks. The Johnson news is good though and Jozy really excites me.

  4. Where is Salvatore Zizzo playing now? I saw him play in the 2007 U20 WC and thought very highly of him.
He was whisked off to Europe by some Bundesliga team, collected splinters riding the pine, then blew out his knee. Will he truly make a renaissance or go the way of Danny Szetela?

  5. First off — who are you to pronounce which players feel a tie to which country? Even your oblique reference to Andy Najar — he’s lived int he US for years, gone to school here, his younger brothers are growing up very American — why should he be tied to Honduras just because he was born there? It’s his call to make, not yours.

  6. There’s always been a good core of kids on the way — we should be great in 2018. The problem has long been that the cohort between these young kids and the Donovan-Dempsey crowd was a huge disappointment (and the rest of Donovan’s class (Gooch, Beasley, Cronin, etc.)) didn’t really pan out so well, either).

  7. During the height of the Cold War (1960s-80s) Spain was choked with US military bases. Nike missile bases (our dagger at the throat of the Soviet), air bases, and nuclear submarine bases as one of our NATO allies.

The submarine base at Rota (SW Spain, near the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and the ancient port city of Cadiz) – my cousin says, was stunning to see as you drove down the coast – submarine after submarine after submarine,…………many of these bases no longer exist as the shift in internal Spanish politics made them unpopular, and the shift in the balance of world power after the fall of the USSR also made them obsolete.

Yet, it’s funny – how many USMNT players have we had who were products of US service men dancing on table tops with Spanish women in the 70s and 80s – ZERO. Correct me if I am wrong.

  8. Jozy has found himself a new home. He looked good in the full highlights of the game. I also like the words “German”, “left back”, and “USMNT”.

  9. Before BB was officially fired but with the writing on the wall, I thought BB might be offered the Olympics as a consolation. But after Klinsmann’s debut against Mexico, I don’t see it anymore. BB’s style does not mesh with Klinsmann’s. I think Klinsi is going to install someone in his own image.

  10. Possibly Jozy, if he keeps working, working, working on his ball handling and finishing and those awesome head shots. He looked great yesterday, and he is so big and strong you cannot bring the guy down. I can see Mourinho unleashing him on Barca 🙂 I am hoping Jozy and Brek Shea can develop a chemistry–that could be a lethal combination mixed in with Donovan and Dempsey and Torres/Adu and the speed and off-ball savvy of Rogers…
