MLS- Philadelphia Union

Le Toux penalties help Union tie FC Dallas

The Philadelphia Union battled back on two occasions from one-goal deficits to earn a valuable point in a 2-2 draw against a strong FC Dallas side at PPL Park on Saturday night.

FC Dallas looked like a good bet to escape PPL Park with a win after taking leads on two occasions, but each time the Union kept battling and earned penalties. Sebastien LeToux converted both penalties to help the Union earn a draw.

FC Dallas opened the scoring on a Maicon goal following a Carlos Valdes blunder, but a Ugo Ihemelu foul set up LeToux's first penalty. Brek Shea made it 2-1 Dallas just before halftime on a tap-in off a rebound, but LeToux answered yet again in the second half when he converted a penalty drawn by Gabriel Farfan for a foul by FC Dallas' Jackson.

FC Dallas centerback George John left the match after earning a second yellow card in the 80th minute. LeToux's equalizing penalty came four minutes later.

The night marked the debut of Freddy Adu, who started and played 62 minutes just a day after being introduced as the Union's newest player. He put in solid effort, but lack of training with Philadelphia and fitness limited Adu's impact in his debut.

What did you think of the match? Did you like what you saw from Adu? Think FC Dallas should have taken all three points?

What I saw is a team that STILL can’t score from the run of play. And the second PK foul was outside the box.

Really excited about this Union team. Hope they don’t sign Angel or some other geriatric forward who will take playing time from their talented young players.

As a Union fan, I have to say that the last couple weeks have been a step in the wrong direction. Dallas was the far better team tonight. I think Freddy will help but the defense who looked so solid earlier in the season is beginning to show large cracks. Attack wise, they cannot put together a full half of fluid futbol let alone 90 minutes. C’Mon the U! Get it together.

Thought the same thing about the 2nd pk… Shame when the better team on the day gets robbed of the points

I couldn’t agree more. The d gave Dallas too much space. I saw to many mental errors that lead to goals tonight. Some one has to start putting the ball in the net. I think that Panuovic is going to answer the call. He got robbed of a goal tonight.

It wasn’t outside the box, but both of those penalties were fairly weak. They weren’t nearly as obvious as the one in the Seattle game that wasn’t called. As always, the problem is consistency.

I don’t get why Union GK insist on punting long every possession with two small guys and no target forwards up top. Dallas got their best chances off Union GK punts in the first 70 minutes. Union gave away possession on numerous punts and too many long pass attempts. Adu was inches from having 2 stellar assist, with time this team could be very good. Union defense needs to be much more decisive, their indecision led to many Dallas opportunities.

I love soccer, but I hate that you can end in a draw most of the time. Why don’t they just have PK’s so that there is actually a winner? It would take 10 extra minute, that is nothing. This game was pretty exciting in its own though, both teams played well.
