SBI MLS Player of the Month: Omar Bravo

When Sporting Kansas City signed Omar Bravo to be a Designated Player last year, it was with months like this past July in mind.

Bravo was the definition of a difference maker, playing key roles in several of Sporting KC's matches as the streaking squad lengthened its unbeaten streak to 13 matches. Bravo's three goals and assist helped earn him SBI MLS Player of the Month honors.

Bravo registered an assist in KC's 2-1 win vs. Portland, delivered a 93rd-minute equalizer vs. Chivas USA, then notched two goals in Sporting's victory against Toronto FC. After an impressive showing in the MLS All-Star Game, Bravo helped set up Teal Bunbury's last-second equalizer against New England last Saturday.

Bravo beat out a strong cast of candidates for July's Player of the Month honors, including Seattle's Osvaldo Alonso, FC Dallas' Kevin Hartman, New York's Thierry Henry and D.C. United's Dwayne De Rosario to name a few. Bravo also became the second straight SKC player to take the honor (Graham Zusi was SBI's MLS Player of the Month for June).

What did you think of Bravo's month? Who would have gotten your vote for July's top MLS player?

  1. Is 14 in a row unbeaten not deadly enough? Espinoza, a WC veteran is in the midfield. Zusi who’s played well is in the midfield. Bravo spends half his time in the midfield. Cesar is effective as D-mid. Just because the players are not big names does not mean the midfield is bereft of quality.

  2. He opens things up for players like Zusi…If they had any qaulity in the midfield, this would be a deadly team. With Collin now out, they better get more defensive help because he was a rock in the back.

  3. I was thinking the same thing. He is very fun to watch, and players like him make the league more fun. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on Mexico’s roster for this friendly next week given his play lately.

  4. A fit, barely 30 DP tearing it up in front of packed houses in a beautiful, SSS in Kansas City? Man, MLS has come a long way. Exciting times. Congrats to Bravo, SKC, and their fans.

Hmm, 3 goals and an assist… Where else did I hear that this month? Oh, yeah: Sanna Nyassi in a single _game_ for the Rapids against NYRB…

  6. The All-Star game ?

I am all for the All Star game, but come on.

Watch him play in a game that means something to anyone.

I like watching him play, he never stops going 110% and you don’t win SBI Player of the Month by not performing.

You are missing a great MLS season, btw.

  7. I thought his runs were the best thing the All-Stars had going…Yes, he missed a difficult volley in his only real chance but he has always been a quality player. The problem with SKC has been their midfield service. Jeferson may prove to be the answer.

  8. He finished poorly in the all star game and was playing cf which he is undersized for in the mls or vs one of the best teams in the world. However, he was in those spots, which no one else seemed to be able to achieve. I don’t even remember the wings doing anything outside of Henry on one occasion.

He hasn’t don’t anything “amazing” in KC, but his movement and overal understanding of the game is without a doubt amougst the best in the league. Just a class player on the field and off, a real profressional

  9. Glad he’s doing well in KC. Haven’t seen him play in his games for KC, but I wouldn’t characterize his All-star game as impressive.
