Sporting Kansas City continued a steady climb up the Eastern Conference standings on Sunday with a vital 1-0 victory over D.C. United at Livestrong Sporting Park.

Kei Kamara delivered the winning goal as Sporting KC's defense pitched a shutout against a D.C. United attack that found itself struggling without Dwayne DeRosario and Charlie Davies in the starting lineup (with Davies not even dressing for the match after a frustrating performance at mid-week against Chicago).

KC manager Peter Vermes trotted out a four-forward attack, with Omar Bravo playing the playmaker role behind the strike trio of Kei Kamara, C.J. Sapong and Teal Bunbury. The result was Sporting KC holding an edge in every statistical category in the match, from shots to shots on goal to possession.

Jimmy Nielsen made two saves for KC's fourth shutout of the season.

Here are the match highlights.

What did you think of Sporting KC's victory? Think D.C. United can recover from its recent slump to grab a playoff spot?

I watched the game and was very impressed, KC completely dictated the play and never gave DC breathing room. They are capable of some pretty possession soccer when they don’t get greedy and start launching long balls, and have some good speed on the field. I picked up my bandwagon ticket, I think they can take out some teams come play-off time.

I had been hoping Seattle could swing a trade for one of SKC’s excess forwards but if they’re moving to this new formation on the regular, that’s out the window. Damn.

  • We need 1 more...

DCU could sure use a playmaker in the midfield now that Olsen has pushed DeRo up to striker. I don’t think Santino or King are going to be able to get it done in that position. It would be nice to have Boskovic back right about now.

I think this was just situational, doubt Vermes keeps Jeferson, who is the 2nd DP, off the field when be doesnt have a knock. Haitian player Joseph might be added to the mix soon as well

Or we could not ignore the obvious and move DeRo back to the midfield and play Davies at striker where maybe he can get some halfway decent service for a change from someone who can actually see the runs he is making.

Yeah, I actually think DeRo is better for the team when at CAM. Davies and Wolff can handle forward duties. Without DeRo and Davies in the lineup there were some serious offensive issues. The defense is another story, I think I saw Jako get burned or out-muscled several times last night, Kitchen too. Credit to where it’s due I guess: SKC’s attack.

  • Are you Serious?

Who will score when he moves back and don’t say Davies because he has been flat out awful. Have you seen his touch on the ball. Its heavier than a Mac Truck which not what you want in a striker.

Have you considered the possibility that he’s just not very good right now, and may never be?

We could talk about the team that lost or we could comment on some of the most attractive football in MLS being played by Sporting which has seem them net results in 16 or the last 17.
