College Rewind: No. 1 UConn wins in OT, Townsend nets 10th goal and more

The University of Connecticut men's soccer team was close to its first blemish on the season, but Nickardo Blake made sure the team's perfect record stayed intact.

Blake ripped home a rebound off a corner kick for his first goal of the season with 61 seconds remaining in the second period of overtime to pace the No. 1 Huskies (Fox Soccer/SBI) to a 1-0 victory over a stingy Yale team Tuesday night.

UConn improved to 9-0 ahead of its crucial Big East contest against No. 4 Louisville this weekend.

Townsend scores 10th goal in Maryland win

Senior forward Casey Townsend scored his 10th goal of the season, as No. 2 Maryland handed No. 23 UNC-Charlotte a 3-1 defeat at Ludwig Field.

Townsend opened the scoring following up a rebound inside the box in the 23rd minute, and Maryland (9-0-1) poured it on over the course of the next 10 minutes, getting an own goal and a John Stertzer header off a corner kick to take a 3-0 lead by the 35th minute.

Donnie Smith tallied his third goal of the year for Charlotte (7-2) just seconds after Stertzer's goal to chip away at the deficit, but neither side scored after halftime, and Maryland's hot start held up. The Terrapins host No. 5 Creighton in a huge matchup on Friday.

UNC tunes up for Duke by shutting down ODU

No. 3 North Carolina prepared for its big ACC showdown with Duke this weekend by topping No. 16 Old Dominion, 3-0, for the club's fourth consecutive shutout.

Kirk Urso opened the scoring in the 30th minute, and Enzo Martinez doubled the lead just after halftime from the penalty spot. 

Rob Lovejoy added an insurance goal on a breakaway for UNC (8-1).

  1. interesting trend I am noticing here… as the MLS continues to develop (on several fronts) the number of comments on college soccer articles has decreased drastically
