No. 1 Connecticut stayed perfect with a win over quality opposition after a 2-0 victory over No. 11 St. John's on Saturday.

More than 5,000 were on hand for the Big East conference opener for both teams. St. John's staved off numerous chances from UConn (8-0), but Allando Matheson finally broke through in the 74th minute, snapping St. John's shutout streak at 636 minutes. Mamadou Doudou Diouf added an insurance goal in the 90th minute for his team-high sixth goal of the season by beating St. John's keeper Rafael Diaz to finish into an empty net.

UConn's defense has been stellar this season, allowing only two goals in eight games, and the Huskies have not been scored on in five games. St. John's (5-2-1) saw its six-game unbeaten street snapped as the Red Storm were shutout for the third time this season.

  1. Some of these ratings are absurd. How the hell is St. Johns ranked numbr 10 in the country? Awesome, they fave up no goals to crappy teams.

  2. Akron gives me hope about developement. I watched them play, Louisville i think? They had a man sent off, yet LVille still sat deep while Akron pressed and possessed with 10 men. Shows me that college soccer isn’t all crap

  3. Akron may not have had the perfect start they enjoyed the last two seasons, but I’ve yet to see another college team that plays as well.

  4. UCLA gave up a free kick goal. To SMU. In the first minute of the game.
