The University of Maryland's perfect start is a thing of the past.

Using a defense-first mentality, Seton Hall held the nation's No. 1 team (Fox Soccer/SBI) to a 0-0 draw in New Jersey Tuesday night.

Maryland outshot Seton Hall 23-6 and had a 13-0 edge in corner kicks, but the Terrapins (7-0-1) couldn't break through and were held to less than two goals for the first time all season.

New York Red Bulls academy player Keith Cardona earned his first start in goal for Maryland and came up with one save to earn the clean sheet. His counterpart, Mario DeClarico, made four saves to post the impressive shutout for Seton Hall (3-2-2).

In other Tuesday night college soccer action:

UConn maintains perfect start

Tony Cascio scored a goal and assisted on another to lift No. 2 UConn to a 2-0 victory over No. 9 Boston College and keep the Huskies perfect on the season (7-0).

Cascio set up Carlos Alvarez in the 51st minute before finding the back of the net on his own 10 minutes later.

UConn turns its attention to a high-profile match this weekend when it takes on No. 14 St. John's in an important Big East clash.

Bates tallies four times; UVA holds on

Will Bates scored four times in the opening 20 minutes, and No. 19 Virginia held on to defeat Radford, 4-3, at Klockner Stadium.

Bates scored in a variety of ways, finishing from close range, scoring on a 20-yard free kick and latching onto a corner kick to head home Virginia's fourth goal.

Iyiola Awosika spearheaded the comeback for Radford, scoring on either side of halftime with the first of his two goals coming on a penalty kick. Luis Grande pulled the visitors within one in the 62nd minute, just two minutes after Awosika's second goal to set up a wild finish during which Radford had a long-range attempt at an equalizer carom off the crossbar in the 85th minute.

UNC squeaks by Wofford

Enzo Martinez' goal in the 56th minute lifted the No. 3 University of North Carolina to a 1-0 victory at unheralded Wofford. Martinez finished off a squared ball from Billy Schuler to break the scoreless deadlock, and the Tar Heels had to survive a Wofford goal being waved off for a handball to secure the victory.

UNC improved to 6-1 with the win and faces Virginia in an anticipated road match Friday night.

TUESDAY COLLEGE SCOREBOARD

UNC Wilmington 1, Duke 4

William & Mary 2, UNC Greensboro 0

  1. was at UConn BC game. Nice game, really even, score a little unfair (2nd goal goalie really made a mess of it). UConn forwards were non existent and there back line played really deep and had trouble playing out of back. BC too had little up top and no forward play from wingbacks. BC’s central midfielder Bekker was a joy to watch- active and creative in a free role, a constant threat going forward with some great shots on goal from distance unlucky not to score (UConn keeper was on his game!)Not far behind was UConn’s Alvarez he accounted for all Huskies offence. These two were the best on the field on this night

  2. Was at the game. It was obvious that Seton Hall did not want to win but just tie from the start of the match. It really was not a great match to watch because Seton Hall did not play but just marked UMD throughout. Obviously it worked…it kept them scoreless but Seton Hall will not win many games playing this way. I felt like I was at a high school soccer game. Disappointing!!!
