SBI MLS Team of the Week: Chivas USA

Chivas USA isn't dead just yet, and it has its veteran, mid-season acquisition to thank for that.

Led by a resurgent Juan Pablo Angel, Chivas USA came back from a two-goal deficit to force a 2-2 road draw with D.C. United and blew out Toronto FC, 3-0, to maintain it's postseason hopes for at least another week and capture SBI MLS Team of the Week honors. Angel tallied braces in both of those games to continue his re-emergence since the trade that brought him to Chivas from rival Los Angeles last month. He has six goals in six appearances with Chivas, including five in his last three games.

Chivas remains on the outside of the present postseason picture, trailing 10th-place New York by four points (and the Red Bulls have a game in hand). Nevertheless, if Chivas can win out in its remaining three games — all of which are at the Home Depot Center — the Goats could make things interesting down the stretch, and they'll look back on this past week as a reason why that's even possible.

Chivas edged out the Houston Dynamo, which won at Dallas to move into first place in the East, and the Los Angeles Galaxy, who won at Columbus with a reserve-heavy lineup, to take home the weekly honors.

What did you think of Chivas USA's week? Do you think Chivas still has a realistic shot at the postseason? Which team did you think had the best week?

  1. What is this 3 consecutive games with multiple goals for Angel? Oh wait never mind that was an own goal vs Chicago lol kidding

He could easily have 10-14 goals right now since they been making some crazy saves even when he got to Chivas USA. I see him getting 3 more, maybe 5 which would put him right on par with his average the last 3 or 5 years.

I hope he comes back next year and gives the Goats a GREAT tandem with him and Braun and even Mondaini. Sorry Ale Moreno, but unless you get picked up by Montreal maybe you will be back up, have no fear, Juan is old and will need relief, and Mondaini doesn’t strike me as the most consistent forward, if he sticks around that is….

This team can be much better with a strong Center back pick up in the draft if they end up in the top 7 or 8 picks. Between Gavin & Zemanski along with Nagamura they have a 3 guys capable of manning the middle whether it’s a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 regardless of a diamond midfield or not. Then with LaBrocca, Flores, Mondaini, Lahoud and the french guy this can be a good team going forward. Glad to see, we need to see their attendance back to the days when it was getting above 16K and on a lot of games 18-20K, they really could use a DP. But doubt Vergara spends the money unless it’s a Mexican star, maybe they can bring in a South American? Better than nothing or the hard headed option of a old Goat star?
