SBI MLS Team of the Week: Seattle Sounders

The well-oiled machine that is the Seattle Sounders keeps on rolling.

Facing a D.C. United team that had just come off gigantic victory and was looking to capitalize on that momentum with the season winding down, the Sounders — led by Alvaro Fernandez, Mauro Rosales and Mike Fucito — put together a complete effort to stymie United's attack, coast to a 3-0 result and earn SBI's MLS Team of the Week Honors.

Seattle got it done regionally as well, as it was the only MLS team to come away with a victory in CONCACAF Champions League play. The Sounders topped Herediano while watching Los Angeles, Toronto and Colorado fall and FC Dallas play to a draw.

Seattle edged out Portland and Philadelphia, which each came up with big victories in the thick of the MLS playoff hunt, to take home the weekly honors.

What did you think of Seattle's week? Which team stood out the most for you?

  1. It’s hard to imagine them having a better season at this point. Of course, there are still important games to be played across all competitions, but they’re perfectly positioned in all of them, something no other MLS team can claim.

Can you imagine how good they would be if Steve Zakuani wouldn’t have been lost for the season?

  2. Do you think Fernandez is better centrally than Friberg? I wonder whether Fernandez will try and occupy the same space Montero tries to take… which was the problem with Ljungberg. I think Friberg may be a better compliment to Alonso and Montero.

  3. I’m not sure RSL has the pieces right now to play as attractive a brand as Seattle. When RSL gets Morales back, it will be a different story.

The way-in-the-future question I have been wondering about lately is what happens to the SSFC lineup when Zakuani is healthy next year? You have Fernandez and Rosales playing incredible ball on the wings. Is there room for Zak? Does he move up front? He played forward in college, could he do it at this level?

  4. I remember when Salt Lake was called the closest thing to Barcelona in MLS….and they beat Seattle a week ago.

I am a huge Sounder’s fan for 30 years now, but there are a lot of teams right there ( or better in some opinions ) with the Sounder’s in fun to watch, great play, etc.

There are some BIG games coming up…it is going to be a ton of fun.

  5. They are so much fun to watch. I’ve been referring a number of my mls hater friends to watch them over the last month, and most came away (rightfully so) impressed. I really hope Morales is able to rebound quickly (i haven’t seen the most recent injury report).

How much of a bummer is it that LA and Seattle won’t meet in the final? Or can they?
