Considering how their season has unfolded, it's no surprise that the University of Connecticut Huskies find themselves atop the initial RPI rankings released by the NCAA.

UConn (13-0-1) is one of two unbeaten teams in the country and deservedly holds the top spot after thus far making it unscathed through a rigorous Big East slate that includes games against St. John's, Louisville and Notre Dame.

The RPI ranking is a big component of how the at-large bids in the NCAA tournament are decided, and results along with a team's strength of schedule and opponents' strength of schedule are taken into account to determine the standings.

Maryland is second behind UConn, followed by Creighton, UC-Irvine, St. John's, Akron, North Carolina and South Florida, respectively. The other remaining unbeaten team, New Mexico (11-0-2), comes in at No. 9. Old Dominion rounds out the top 10, slotting in behind the Lobos.

An entire ranking of the 203 Division I men's programs in the country can be seen here.

What do you think of the rankings? Do any teams and their corresponding rankings surprise you?

  1. akron fell relative to what? this if the first rpi of the year. it’s a computer…it always makes up stupid crap midway through the season, but tends to regress to the mean by ncaa tourney time.

  2. Makes no sense that Akron falls in rankings even though they didnt lose. UC Irvine and St. Johns should be below Akron and NC. New Mexico should be higher. Creighton should be lower
