Hyndman: Ferreira unlikely to be available for playoffs

Any plans that FC Dallas fans might have had for David Ferreira to make his return in the postseason should be put on hold.

Ferreira, last year's MLS MVP, has been out since breaking his ankle in an April 23 victory at Vancouver. He has been working his way back to fitness but is unlikely to suit up for FCD during the postseason, according to FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman.

"David will be more than likely not be available," Hyndman said. "The reason I say that is that he's only 65-to-75 percent and yet to train in competitive games, so we're doing a lot of caution with him.

"It looks like he's staring to get his confidence, but if he came back for New York he wouldn't be the same player he was before he got hurt. If he gets reinjured, then it'll be a real crime on my part."

Ferreira's original injury timeline was a three-month layoff following the challenge from Whitecaps defender Jonathan Leathers that broke his ankle in two places.

That timeline got extended to the point that he couldn't return prior to the end of the season, and FCD appears to be exerting every possible precaution to ensure that its key central midfielder remains healthy for the long haul.

Hyndman did leave open the slight possibility that if FC Dallas reached next month's final that Ferreira might be able to play some part, but that seems like an iffy proposition at best.

Were you holding out hope that Ferreira would play a part for FCD's playoff run? Think it's wise not to rush him back into action? How do you see FCD faring in the postseason?

  1. Both John and Brek haven’t been as strong in recent games. The heavy schedule seemed to catch up with them. NY is a very dangerous opponent. If they get out to a lead it might be tough to come back unless FCD breaks out of its funk.

  2. FCD is a completely different team without Ferreira…Jackson has stepped up in the midfield, but will he be available for the most important match of the year???

  3. What’s with this notion that people have to slow down or retire after turning 30?

Didn’t a 32 or 33 year old just win the Golden Ball at the World Cup?

Let him prove himself first before you write him off, but if you think he’s not worth the price of seeing him thru his injury, yeah go ahead and trade him, for example put him in Chicago, Houston, San Jose and what to see if those teams don’t automatically become playoff teams or championship contenders.

Ferreira is a beast! You need him with the crappy forward play Dallas has right now

  4. We should be fine. As long as the guys are playing together and working hard, we’ll be ok. The last two home games they seemed to be bickering at each other over a bad pass or missed opportunity.

The engine this year has to be Brek. I love DF but honestly, at his age I doubt he will come back near the top form he had two season ago.

I see John and Brek leaving in the next trade window sadly. We will hang on to the last few games we can get out of DF but I believe his best days are behind him and we will pay for him to try and make it back in the long run, rather than cut our losses and move on.

  5. SKC, and Philly are solid teams, Houston is in the East as well and can be a real threat if FCD were to prevail, which I think they will givin the fact that Red Bulls are really just hype and no substance or little of it….

  6. This should be a reminder to FCD fans like myself that ANY post season success this season is simply gravy. A good run of form mid-season got our hopes up too high, and FCD is still a decent team, but its like a good car with no engine. At the end of the day it wont run despite all the nice complimenting feautures. The ONLY hope is going through the weaker East, but I doubt that’ll be enough…

  7. It would have been great but there has been such little news on it that was not expecting it to happen.

I think of the three that were injured right around that time he was expected back the earlies and is the only one that did not make it back.
