Fantasy MLS: Week 33

With most of the playoff spots spoken for, the final week of MLS is sure to be unpredictable.

Coaches are more likely to rest key players, which makes picking a fantasy team very difficult. Since lineups lock for MFLS on Wednesday, you will have to set your lineup with some uncertainty this week.

Portland and D.C. United play in a mid-week game, with both having an outside shot at taking New York Red Bulls' spot in the playoffs. Portland is three points back and D.C. is five points back, both with a game in hand. With this highly odd week, I would try to stick with the players that got you this far in the season.

Here are a few more items to consider before setting your fantasy lineup this week:

MFLS WEEK 33 BEST XI

GK – Bill Hamid, DCU – D.C. United has two home games left and everything to play for. The young goal keeper has two opportunities to add to his seven clean sheets on the season.

D – Sheanon Williams, PHI – Philadelphia needs a result against New York in order to win the Eastern Conference. Also, without Henry, New York might struggle to get its offense going.

D – Nat Borchers, RSL – Salt Lake is tied with Dallas in points going into the final week. They have both made the playoffs but are vying for a better position in the final standings. RSL plays a Portland team at home that could be eliminated from playoff contention going into the weekend so this could be an easy win.

D – George John, DAL – Dallas looked very strong last week, getting two wins including one shutout. I look for them to build on that performance this week with a game vs. San Jose, who has nothing to play for.

M – Brek Shea, DAL – Shea is putting up MVP-like numbers this season. He is in form and is a great play every week.

M – Dwayne De Rosario, DCU – If D.C. has any shot of making the playoffs, they will rely on De Rosario to get them there.

M – Sebastien Le Toux, PHI – Le Toux has scored 11 goals and recorded nine assists on the season, with most of those goals coming late in the season. He is going against a New York side that has leaked goals throughout the year, and he should have a good chance to add to his totals.

M – Brad Davis, HOU – Davis has been very consistent all year, notching four goals and 15 assists on the season. He will be going against a strong L.A. side that has already clinched the Supporters' Shield and should be tempted to rest some of its key starters.

F – Fredy Montero, SEA – Montero has scored six goals in his past five games, making him one of the hottest forwards in MLS. Look for him to end the season strong with a game vs. Chivas.

F – Teal Bunbury, SKC – Sporting Kansas City is still in the running to win the Eastern Conference and Bunbury has been on a roll, scoring in his past two matches. Bunbury will need to have a good game if KC wants to finish first in the Eastern Conference.

F – Alvaro Saborio, RSL – Real Salt Lake will likely go for the win this weekend as they play a Portland side that is very poor on the road. Look for him or Fabian Espindola to get a goal this week.

INJURY WATCH

Thierry Henry, Kyle Beckerman, Jackson and Drew Moor will miss this week’s games due to suspension. For injury news, check out the most updated MLS injury report. Also, many players picked up red cards and have accumulated enough yellow cards for suspension, so don’t forget to check out the latest disciplinary report.

The deadline for Week 33 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. Be sure to change your lineups by then.

  1. I’m expecting low-scoring, squeaky-bum time type games. I’m loading up on defenders in a private league that rewards shutouts.
