For the second straight day, the Portland Timbers got the better of the Vancouver Whitecaps by a 1-0 scoreline.

After the Timbers' first team accomplished that feat in the debut of BC Place on Sunday, the Portland reserves did the same on Monday on the strength of an 82nd-minute goal from Bryan Burke and a clean sheet by Jake Gleeson.

Burke capitalized on a rebound after Bright Dike's shot was saved by Jay Nolly, giving Portland (6-2-2) the edge in its final Reserve League game of the season.

Omar Salgado came off the bench at halftime for Vancouver (2-5-2), replacing Designated Player Mustapha Jarju.

Here are a few more weekend results from around the MLS Reserve League:

AMARIKWA HAT TRICK PACES RAPIDS

Quincy Amarikwa netted a hat trick in a seven-minute span in the first half, and the Colorado Rapids rolled to a 5-1 victory over FC Dallas on Sunday.

Amarikwa finished from inside the area in the 32nd and 37th minutes before being on the fortunate end of a deflection to cap off his hat trick in the 39th minute. Joseph Nane's shot hit him in the back before making its way over the goal line to seal Amariwka's impressive day.

Ross LaBaeux and Andre Akpan also scored for Colorado (3-5-1), which jumped out to a 4-0 lead and conceded in the 85th minute, when Ruben Luna found the back of the net for Dallas (4-4-0).

TFC TOPS NEW YORK FOR FIRST WIN

Toronto FC academy player Stefan Vukovic scored twice, as the Reds toppled the New York Red Bulls, 3-1, on Saturday to claim their first Reserve League victory.

Keith Makubuya opened the scoring early for Toronto (1-5-2), beating Red Bulls keeper Alex Horwath in the sixth minute. Vukovic then blew the game open with goals in the 10th and 32nd minutes for Toronto, which had centerback Kyle Davies play his first minutes since being acquired for Dasan Robinson ahead of the league's roster freeze deadline.

Semso Nikocevic pulled one back for New York (2-4-0) in the 47th minute, but the Red Bulls, who got 90-minute performances from Corey Hertzog, John Rooney and Matt Kassel, among others, couldn't get any closer.

BRUIN BRACE CARRIES HOUSTON

Rookie striker Will Bruin scored twice to carry the Houston Dynamo to a comfortable, 3-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday.

Former Fire striker Calen Carr assisted on Bruin's first goal before tallying an insurance goal for the Dynamo (5-4-0), which scored all of its goals prior to halftime.

Homegrown Player Victor Pineda started and went the distance for Chicago (6-2-1).

  1. Isn’t the reserve league only about 10 games per team? How can an MLS team afford to have all their youth teams play 30 games a season but can’t afford the reserve team to play a full season?
