Who do you see finishing first in the East?

As we wind down to the final weekend of the 2011 MLS Regular Season the race for the Eastern Conference regular season title, and the No. 1 seed that comes with it, is wide open. Four different teams have a chance to clinch the top spot in the East.

Right now the front-runners are Sporting Kansas City and Philadelphia. The Union play their final regular-season game against New York at Red Bull Arena on Thursday while Sporting KC faces D.C. United at RFK Stadium in its regular season finale. The teams are tied on points, head-to-head and goal differential, with Sporting KC holding the edge in the next tie-breaker, goals scored.

Then you have the Columbus Crew, which faces the Chicago Fire on Saturday. The Fire could be eliminated from playoff contention by the time the team's meet, but then again Chicago could have a glimmer of hope left if enough things go there way.

The long-shot contender for the East title is a team that may actually have the easiest path. The Houston Dynamo face the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday, the final match of the season, but it's also a match the Galaxy are expected to use to rest several key players. If Sporting KC, Philadelphia and Columbus all fail to win, the Dynamo could clinch the East with a victory.

  1. KC will finish first.

I was pretty gung-ho on Philly finishing first until last weekend. Toronto played well, but Nowak said it himself that the union looked like a team that was not ready to win that match. Unless they find that killer instinct and take NYRB to the woodshed this week I think we see them bowing to the Crew in the first round.

It would be good karma if DC sneaks in and NY crashes out

Regardless, all this photo finish in the east excitement aside, the big story is still in the West: do we see Seattle/LA keep from choking in round 1 and see an epic matchup in the conference final? If so, who walks away from that and does it give the east coast opponent any kind of edge ?

  3. DC United will win their last 2 games (but miss the playoffs) leaving KC with 48 points and Houston will defeat the Galaxy and win the East. I see Columbus and Chicago with a tie, Red Bulls pull out a 1-0 win.
