Boswell, Convey, Cannon among veterans available in MLS Re-Entry Draft

MLS Logo

Major League Soccer has revealed the names of the players who will be made available in the upcoming MLS Re-Entry Draft.

Bobby Boswell, Bobby Convey, Joe Cannon and Andy Williams are just some of the veterans left exposed by their MLS teams in the Re-Entry Draft, which will be held on Tuesday.

Teams can still sign or trade players they have left exposed in the Re-Entry Draft, and have until Friday to do so. Here is a full rundown of all the rules involving the MLS Re-Entry process, which is essentially a form of free agency established by the new MLS Collective Bargaining Agreement in 2010.

Tuesday is the first of two phases of the Re-Entry process. The first phase gives teams the option to pick up available players at their current salary figures. The second phase is the period when teams can negotiate new contracts with available players.

The order for the draft is based on reverse order of the 2011 MLS standings, with the expansion Montreal Impact selecting 19th.

Here is the full list of players available in Tuesday's MLS Re-Entry Draft:

What do you think of the list? Which names are you most surprised to see on the list?

  1. Well, true but I think he has a low budget for actual players, and he was of the opinion that the Quakes ownership is actually the wealthiest in the league. A stadium is great of course, but… players

  2. I wouldnt be surprised if TFC went after Boswell as well, we badly need a CB, question is whether hes a commanding one or just one that toes the line

  3. Wolff is not a publicity hog, he is the face of the ownership. The guy who owns most of the Quakes and A’s (Fischer) doesn’t WANT any publicity. It’s just an investment for him, Wolff is the one actually running the show. And how does it make sense to be disenchanted with an ownership that’s just about to build you a new stadium? I’d say the problem is with Yallop and the front office, not with ownership. I don’t think ownership told them to acquire that out-of-shape dude based on video. This conversation, if real, seems to indicate that Yallop is completely clueless and probably needs to be fired.

  4. Alot more players will be taken this year thats for sure, Top 5 picks 1) Boswell- Every team wants a guy like him, his price tag may be too heavy for some teams but look for New England Or New York to take a nab at him 2) Convey- Can be great just needs the right coach- Seattle would be great for him. 3) Jean Alexandre- 42,000 against the cap isnt bad- he hasnt lived up to his promise- but hes still rather young 4) Borman- A really solid backup left back- hes a great guy and alot of fans really loved him here in new york- hes funny and could help lighten the mood back at new yorks rather dysfunctional locker room 5) Andy Williams- alot of expierience- a team like montreal could use him.

  5. And one more random thing that blew my mind- Yallop thought that the next MLS franchise would be… Orlando. Never heard that before.

  6. Oh, and as far as DP’s go, he thought that Anelka to Montreal, Drogba to Galaxy, and DelPiero to Chicago were likely. Also mentioned Seedorf coming as a possibility

  7. Yes, it is the number of years in the league. The player’s age and time in the league determines their automatic salary if they are selected in Stage 1 of the re-entry draft. Young players get their contract option price, older players get their 2011 salary, and veterans (over 30 years old and 8+ years in the league) get 105% of their 2011 salary.

  8. Some tidbits while I have time:

He’s disenchanted with the Quakes ownership and the Moneyball approach- feels like SJ will never have more than one DP, when the rest of the league will have 2-3. Thinks Wolff in particular is kind of a spotlight-hog when he really owns like 10% of the team.

The new stadium is on-track and loves the location, but he bemoans the fact that the Quakes don’t have any visibility in SF. Said they even once explored the idea of moving to SF and playing at Kezar, but couldn’t do it. Envies the home field advantage at Portland, Seattle, etc.

Was glad that Galaxy won, because it vindicates the DP appraoch (I actually said this, and he responded with an emphatic “YES!”.

Thinks Convey is a good player, but not nearly as good as he thinks he is.

Is very sad about the DC United stadium issue. Had nothing but positive things to say about Kevin Payne and working with him.

Has a ton of respect for Beckham as a person and player, but that he and his people needed to be put in their place in LA before that would work, which didn’t happen while he was there.

The one that cracked me up- he said that the new trend of sending players overseas for training in the EPL was strategic- Wondolowski was sent to a big club (Spurs I think) because they were afraid a smaller club might turn it into a trial. Figured Dallas thought the same way in sending Shea to Arsenal.

  9. really sucks when you get cut from the League Pool of Goal Keepers. that is not even a team. I hope it is because he is moving on to better things.

  10. So…this fits into this thread how? DeRo was acquired through a mid-season trade with Toronto and then traded to DC for Dax McCarty and… I can’t recall if there was allocation money or anything else incuded in the deal. Obviously, if DC got him straight up for McCarty they got a great deal. Not that McCarty is a bad player, but just not quite on par with DeRo.

  11. If it were me, I’d see some cap space open after unloading Quaranta and Simms, and plug him in on the left wing, move Pontius up top.

Pontius and De Ro up top, supported by Convey, Kitchen, Boskovic, and Najar in the midfield. Yeah.

  12. More please. What else did Frank share?

(Not surprised about Convey. Guy has played with a chip on his shoulder for a long time.)

  13. I had the random pleasure of sitting next to Frank Yallop and his wife on a flight from Orlando to SF yesterday. They were super nice, and really excited to meet a fan that wanted to talk about MLS and its future. I asked him about Convey, and boy he confirmed the reports about his corrosive attitude with both San Jose and DCU. As a United supporter, I’m kind of hoping DCU steers clear after hearing that.

  14. Tino was a backup anyway, the wings belong to Najar and Pontius next year. Not going to pay Bobby Convey 200 grand to back up Pontius.

  15. If you aren’t selected in the draft, then you’re off to free agency if your club doesn’t want you.

For example, last year Corey Ashe failed to negotiate for a higher salary and the Dynamo listed him. He wasn’t picked (because Ashe overvalued himself) and Houston went back into negotiations with him at a lower asking price until they eventually signed him.

Other players, like Adrian Serioux in 2010, fail to get selected, cannot negotiate with other teams, and fade off into some other profession.

    Reply
  16. Because he’s amazing trade bait. As it is, Kinnear is solidly going with Cameron-Hainault in central defense. That pushes Boswell to the bench, which means that he is being overpaid to not play.

With as good a defender as Boswell, that means the Dynamo can seriously come out on top if a trade negotiation is reached with another team.

    Reply
  17. Does the listing team (let’s use Boswell from Houston as an example) have the right of first refusal? That is, once you put Boswell on this list do you have any way to retain him (other than no one else wanting him)? If no one takes him at his current salary, i.e. the first round, can anyone negotiate with him or do they “draft” him and then try to work out a deal? If I recall last year if you don’t get selected you become a free agent and can deal with anyone.

    Reply
  18. IIRC, a team picking a player in the first round has some level of restriction placed on them as far as the contract goes, which makes most teams pass on players that they might want UNLESS they think that somebody else might take them. Is it that they have to pick up the full option amount? Then, in the second round, I think they are able to re-negotiate the contract. If form holds same as last year, it will only be the players that fill a specific need for a team that has space to take on the contract that get picked – like Angel with LA, for example. Plenty of teams might have wanted him, but only LA was willing to take a chance on him AND pay the full amount on his contract.

  19. Unless they see Convey as a midfield option, perhaps to replace Quaranta, then they’re not going after him. They just traded for Robbie Russell, remember? Boswell would be a nice fit, I think — leaving McDonald and White for depth — but I’m not sure the team is prepared to sit McDonald (or Jakovic).

  20. Philadelphia Union Miglioranzi, Stefani M 6

How did starting him over Adu, Torres and Mapp work out against Houston? Oh, he sucks? Ahhhhh.

    Reply
  21. well, i can’t say I’m surprised simms is on the list. kitchen is absolutely going to be used as our holding mid now. i don’t want santino to leave either.

  22. Ignorant British dude here. What are the numbers on the right of the list? Are they the number of years the player’s been in the league. Sort of fits from what I know of them.

    Reply
  23. I can’t wait to see who will be the next team to think “Boy, that Nate Jaqua is tall, I bet if we crossed the ball in he would be able to put it away” and start him for about six months then put him on the bench forever! He’s the Peter Crouch of the MLS minus the ability to score for the national team. Everytime he’s brought in we hear about what a big part of the team he will be then he’s on the bench in no time.
