Mid-Day Ticker: Buddle to train with West Ham, Seton Hall names new coach, and more

A coaching change at FC Ingolstadt led to an early winter break for Edson Buddle, who was sent home until the new year. The U.S. national team striker isn't going to lay around doing nothing during the German winter break though. He has headed to London, where he will spend a week training with West Ham United.

Buddle left Germany early after new Ingolstadt head coach Tomas Oral sent him home before the team's final match prior to the winter break. This despite the fact Buddle is the team's leading scorer with six goals.

Buddle's agent, Richard Motzkin, confirmed that Buddle is training with West Ham, and it sounds like his future with the German second division club is very much up in the air.

The news come just a month after Buddle impressed with the U.S. national team, scoring in the team's 3-2 win against Slovenia.

Here are some other news stories to get you through the afternoon:

SETON HALL HIRES ECHEVERRY TO REPLACE SCHELLSCHEIDT

Replacing a legendary coach like Manny Schellscheidt was never going to be easy, but Seton Hall has hired the coach long expected to follow in Schellscheidt's footsteps.

Seton Hall has hired former Pirates standout and former Seton Hall assistant coach Gerson Echeverry as the team's new head coach. Echeverry returns to Seton Hall after spending the past three years as an assistant with the U.S. Under-17 national team.

Schellscheidt retired as head coach after 25 years on the job. Echeverry served as an assistant for Schellscheidt for five seasons. As a player, Echeverry was one of the most accomplished players in Seton Hall history. He is ranked fourth all time in career points.

VILLA FACES 'SLIM' CHANCE OF RETURNING THIS SEASON

Barcelona striker David Villa has only a "slim chance" of returning to play for Barcelona this season, and could miss the European Championships for Spain, after surgery to repair the broken leg he suffered during the Club World Cup.

AC MILAN TO MEET WITH MANCHESTER CITY ABOUT TEVEZ

  1. Looks like it’s a budgetary issue:

“The US international’s agent, Richard Motzkin, confirmed the news via Twitter on Monday evening. Despite various German reports hinting that Buddle was in hot water with new manager Tomas Oral, MLSsoccer.com has learned the striker was allowed to leave the team before last week’s win over St. Pauli because the relegation fighters have been directed to trim the budget.

Just third among squad forwards in field time this season, the 30-year-old New York native leads Ingolstadt with six goals in 2.Bundesliga play. Since joining from the LA Galaxy as a free agent last winter, Buddle has hit nine times in 31 league outings.”

  2. According to the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper, coach Oral has said he wants players who “eat up kilometers and have the right body language.” The paper speculates that Oral doesn’t count Buddle among that category of players.

  3. West Ham has some problems as far as quality and health of those strikers.
Cole does well, however Cole is almost like a Brian Ching and does well holding up the ball up front. He’s never been one to take on a defensive line.
Then you have Frederic Piquionne, whose confidence is shot and looks lazy, John Carew whose form is questionable, and Sam Baldock who was doing really well until he got injured.
All that being said, I don’t know if Buddle would really bring anything extra to the table. The Hammers are pushing for a return to EPL next season. Considering some of the names being thrown around as potential striker targets in the transfer window, it makes me think that Buddle’s chances are slim.

  4. Edson won’t join West Ham he’s not good enough. Send him back to the Galaxy, he’ll be good off the bench.

Btw, judging by that picture he’s really bilked up! I never realized how much he looks lik Jozy Altidore.

  5. I believe he goes thru the allocation order since he is a current US mens national team pool player. The Galaxy wanted him back but he found the Bundesliga 2 contract with Ingolstadt

My guess is he goes thru the allocation order as the new year will be resetting that soon. Montreal gets 1st dibs, followed by Vancouver, New England ect ect based worst regular season records for non-playoff teams. Then as teams got eliminated from playoffs the one with the lower overall seeding in regular season comes next and so on… Houston & LA are last obviously

  6. Sucks for Buddle. And not even a year after he came to the club. But I’m sure he can find interest in other 2 Bundesliga teams not to mention some interest from Dutch/Danish teams. Choose wisely dude.

  7. Potts already knows Sebastian Lletget.

He’s already accepted a US Under 20 offer for their match with France. If he likes it who knows.

My guess would be England is his first choice by a lot if he gets a chance at it.

  8. Ingolstadt or London?

A team possibly headed for the 3.Bundesliga or a team possibly headed back to the EPL?

Only concern would be getting minutes at WHU. They’ve got strikers that have played in the EPL before, so there’s talent. Carlton Cole (7) seems to be the only striker bagging goals for them this year. The others are at 2 or less.

Plus he could sell Daniel Potts on the USMNT!

  9. yeah, sounds like a good time to move on. playing well, something weird with coach…new club time.

obviously the coach sees him more than us, but to me, a player who is dismissed for winter break early and chooses to go find another club to train with in that time can’t be a massive discipline issue. think we’d all like to know what’s going on.

  10. Hi i’m from ingolstadt. even the fans here don’t know whats going on with edson buddle. in the beginning he had some problems with the physical strength in the 2. bundesliga. and to become so fit, to play 90 min.
the last 3 month he’s doing better.

a friend of mine told me, that the new Coach of FC Ingolstadt, wasn’t happy with Buddles training performance.

  11. Nothing for sure. The manager was asked whether Buddle would be there after the new year and he said he can’t comment on that. Speculation over poor training or the fact that Ingolstadt just needs to get their wage bill.
