  1. Wouldn’t Mattocks add yet another international player to the Impact’s roster (when they’re currently over the limit), or does GA cancel that out?

  2. He drifted out wide too much and did not hold the ball up particularly well. He seemed to slow the team down. He’s a good guy, but the fit wasn’t there and for the money Timbers FO and supporters were expecting a lot more.

The only dynamic goal that really comes to mind was his strike away at Vancouver, but that was very late in the season.

  3. I’m guessing ladies’ pool costs less to cover. Also, I think ESPN’s deal gives them a limited number of games. I’m guessing the Italy game makes the cut, even if it’s an afternoon game.

  4. Absolutely shocking we didnt see Yamada, Paniagua, Evan James, & Antoine Hoppenot drafted today imo. They were all very exciting midfielders to watch at the combine with good skill. They have to be favorites in the supplemental rounds I’d guess…

  5. Portland struggled to score (besides dead balls) for most of the year. Which is a shame b/c otherwise the team showed a lot of heart, reasonably good defense. But if they couldn’t get a chance of a restart they mostly couldn’t score. And if you talk to a Portland fan, they’ll tell you that Cooper disappointed the first half of the season (and even got benched at one point).

I suspect it’s a combination of “value” (as in Portland thought they could get an equal number of goals for a lot less money or get a far better player for the same amount of money–and I think that’s true) with fit (a Timbers fan might know better but my sense was that Cooper wore out his welcome a bit–had some abrasion with Spencer at one point and didn’t deliver like the owner and fans thought he would).

  6. hard to believe, right? Way to go ESPN. Obviously they don’t want the USMNT games to interfere with their ladies pool tournament rebroadcast.

Letter-writing campaign! If anyone knows where to send such a letter, post it here!

  7. Can Mattocks play for the USA or is he locked in Jamaica? Just wondering because I wouldn’t mind a striker with his pace and ability in a US shirt.

  8. How so? Cooper got 8 goals with minimal service. NY (Richards, Marquez, etc.) will get him the ball a lot more. And if he doesn’t do well, NY drops him and it won’t have cost a cent in allocation money.

Plus they’re losing Agudelo, Henry probably for 3 months and Rodger’s north of 30. Should they just sit on their asses at Forward? And they’ve got tons of allocation space with Ream and probably Agudelo moving on.

I’m not saying it’s a definite masterful move, but it’s definitely not a reckless worthy-of-Chivas sort of thing.

  9. I take great comfort in knowing that, no matter what I may do or say today, I can’t possibly be as stupid as the New York Red Bulls just were. Yes, the high water mark for stupidty for January 12 is well out of reach.

  10. Happens to at least one player every year. See Danny Cruz for example. Honestly, they tend to fall to Chicago a lot as well it seems. Sean Johnson, Patrick Nyarko.

    He’ll be taken soon.

  11. Do you help run the Redskins or something? Their business model in the NFL has be similar to NY’s in MLS. Trade draft picks for overrated players, sign big name free agents, hire a bigger name coach, and then not make the playoffs.

    Rinse. Repeat.

NY needs to start keeping their draft picks and building a core of young talented players. Agudelo is their most promising young player and they’re letting him rot. Ream was their second most promising and they destroyed his confidence so badly that he’s about to go to Bolton and fight against relegation rather than stay.

  12. Portland played him a lot more than their other forwards due to a sort of sunk cost fallacy. He has a big contract and did not perform relative to his cost. Perlaza would have likely scored more goals than him given the same playing time.

  13. Off-topic but relevant. US should announce soon a friendly match against Brazil on May 30 or 31, to be played in Boston or Washington. Brazil will also play Mexico (June 3 – Dallas) and Argentina (June 9 – New Jersey).

  14. This is completely off-topic but are the upcoming January US Men friendlies seriously only being aired on ESPN3 and Galavision? No English-language TV broadcast?

  15. Likely that Agudelo is either on his way out or is going to be used on the wing.

If he stays he’ll be ready for plenty of those 90th minute sub ins (which knowing Backe will probably be his first sub of the game)

  16. Um, just last year CBs like Jalil Anibaba and AJ Soares were taken in the draft. Omar Gonzalez and George John are quality CBs from the draft. You know who else? TIM REAM.

  17. Trading for Cooper doesn’t make sense to me. I think he’ll have a fine season with Henry. But it probably relegates Agudelo to the bench (as in…nailed to the bench) and that’s bad for the USNT.

  18. do you really expect to have a quality, tested cb from a draft pick? get real.. Cooper is a great move.. draft picks are over rated

  19. It’s official. NYRB are being run by feces-flinging monkeys. This deal makes no sense: Henri needs a speedy partner, not a guy like Cooper, they already have multiple forwards, they have a crying need for a CB in the draft but they trade away their pick. Another dumb move by a guy who specializes in dumb moves. It sucks being a NYRB fan.

  20. Soler was talking about the challenges of Agudelo being on the national team yesterday and how he will be in the olympics. I think they are going to move him on.

  21. I’m not sure I understand the Cooper trade. I suppose he’ll pair well with Henry, but it also seems like they don’t plan to play Agudelo.
