MLS Combine Spotlights: Sam Garza, Nick DeLeon and Tony Cascio

Skillful wingers in the player pool are at a premium ahead of Thursday's MLS SuperDraft, but three of the top players available at the position are some of the more sought-after attackers eligible for selection.

Sam Garza, a Generation adidas signing out of UCSB who can play up top or on the wing, helped his stock considerably with his showing while playing for the adiPure team at the Combine and had a big hand in helping set up Ethan Finlay as part of the Creighton forward's hat trick.

Seniors Nick DeLeon and Tony Cascio, both Arizona natives who have already signed contracts with MLS, had up-and-down experiences at the combine. DeLeon, also on adiPure, was limited to one game after tweaking his hamstring and did not get the chance to fully show off his arsenal to the scouts and coaches in attendance. While that is something that could cost him come Thursday, he should still have a place solidified in the top half of the first round after proving to be one of the preeminent attacking talents in the country while at Louisville.

Cascio, meanwhile, turned in mixed results in Florida, but his productivity at UConn and combination of size and quickness on the wing should make him a mid-first-round pick.

SBI caught up with all three players at the combine, where they talked about the experience, the level of competition, their thoughts about the upcoming draft and some other odds and ends:

  1. Garza is the real deal and makes EVERYONE near him better. Just ask Ethan Finlay. He should go 1st round. UCSB produces tough pro-ready players.
