MLS Notes: D.C. adds defender, Wright trains with FC Dallas and more

D.C. United's preseason personnel surge continued on Wednesday with the acquisition of Argentine centerback Emiliano Dudar from BSC Young Boys in Switzerland.

The 6-foot-4, 30-year-old Dudar is a player with experience on a number of levels and is a one-time Swiss league Defender of the Year (2009-2010). Dudar has played in Champions League qualifying matches and Europa League games while with Young Boys along with Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores matches during his lengthy career in South America.

Dudar also comes with a checkered medical past. He suffered a concussion after a nasty collision in a game in Sept., 2010, and had to be put in a medically induced coma because of the severity of the injury.

At D.C., Dudar will provide depth at centerback and compete for minutes with Dejan Jakovic, Brandon McDonald and Ethan White.

WRIGHT TRAINING WITH FC DALLAS

Veteran English goalkeeper Richard Wright is in preseason camp with FC Dallas, despite the club being set with three goalkeepers under contract.

The 34-year-old Wright formerly played for Arsenal and Everton (where he backed up Tim Howard his last year there) and most recently was with Ipswich Town.

FC Dallas has starter Kevin Hartman, backup Chris Seitz and Mexican U-18 start Richard Sanchez already on the roster, but that hasn't stopped coach Schellas Hyndman from taking a look at Wright, who he said would not be signed as a fourth option. Hyndman did add that the club is looking at future options to bolster the position.

"Instead of signing someone, we have the opportunity to look at a few keepers and see if there's someone we might want to sign in the summer window or maybe someone we might want to have on our radar for next year," Hyndman said on FC Dallas' website. "If we do anything, we might do a pre-contract.

"(Wright)'s a goalkeeper that would want to come in and be competing for a No. 1 spot. This will give us a chance to see if he's in that category."

CHICAGO SIGNS DUBE

The Chicago Fire agreed to terms with re-entry draft pick Kheli Dube, signing the former New England Revolution forward on Wednesday.

Dube spent the last four seasons with the Revolution, where he tallied 14 goals. He was limited to just five appearances last season, though, and will compete with a crowd of players for playing time, including new signing Federico Puppo, 12-goal scorer Dominic Oduro and Orr Barouch, who the club purchased outright after having him on loan last season.

What do you think of the signing for DCU? Find it odd the Wright was training with FCD with the club's keeper situation so settled? Do you see Dube playing meaningful minutes for the Fire?

  1. I’ve seen him play twice and was impressed both times. Goff got a report from someone overseas that was pretty impressive. He’s 6’4″ and supposedly plays very good balls out of the back. That said, the big question is whether or not he suffers from concussion syndrome.
