Almost two years ago, Paraguayan forward Salvador Cabañas was months away from being a starting striker in the World Cup until he was left in a fight for his life after being the victim of a shooting at a Mexican bar.
Now he's on the verge of a stunning comeback to professional soccer.
Cabañas is set to return to the field with 12 de Octubre, a club in Paraguay's third division where he began his career, pending a transfer agreement with Mexico's Club America and final clearance from his doctors.
The Paraguay national team and Club America, Cabañas' last club, played a testimonial match for Cabañas over the summer, one in which he participated on a limited basis for both sides. The 31-year-old forward has trained with the Paraguayan national team as part of his comeback as well, playing with a bullet fragment lodged in his skull, something that doctors won't remove because of the risk involved in the procedure. The fact that he is even alive and functioning is an incredible feat in its own right. Now, it appears that he is set to take the next step in completing his miraculous return to the playing field.
Good luck!
It wont happen overnight, but USA will slowly gain market share
No compassion. He was involved with the Narcos. Too bad he keeps getting glorified.
Obviously somebody reads too many papers. Not only are these guys incredibly safe (money does that), but the violence is usually limited to criminal on criminal attacks and only in select regions.
And Cabañas wasn’t a random target. The untold side of the story is that Cabañas was connected to the guys who shot him.
Usually it’s not good to speak on a subject on which you are blatantly ignorant.
i hope he’s gonna wear a helmet
what strong dude… good luck.
im pretty sure the constant threat of machine gun fire, the sighting of dead bodies, car jackings, etc… would trump a few thousand a year.
I’ve always loved watching Cabanas play. Good luck to him.
The $alarie$ in Mexico are the best in the hemisphere. There’s no way MLS can be competitive on that scale for a long while.
Movie in the making.
I saw this guy in GDL for the Classico a few years back. The guy was so amazing to see play at that time. Good to hear this news.
crazy, shot in the head and back on the field! hope he can make it back to the Paraguay squad for at least one game.
+1
Cabanas was a great forward to watch.
If the violence in Mexico continues, MLS could become the destination for regional talent.
I don’t think he should use his head to win the ball. It is not like he needs to anyway because he is great in taking set pieces.
I don’t know if I’d be playing or especially heading with bullet fragments in my brain, but pretty spectacular recovery, considering GSW to head…
crazy. good luck to him.
