Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Jozy Altidore 1 (Reuters)

By FRANCO PANIZO

Days after his head coach cited a lack of progress as a reason for his benching, Jozy Altidore responded in a big way.

In his first start for AZ Alkmaar in 2012, Altidore bagged a brace in the club's 3-3 draw with Heerenveen. Altidore scored the game's opener when he received the ball with his back to goal, turned and fired a shot to the near post. He added his 13th of the season across all competitions in the second half by receiving a pass and slotting home a shot from 13 yards out. Altidore nearly completed a hat-trick, but a shot on a breakaway skimmed just wide.

Herculez Gomez also found the back of the net, opening his scoring account with Santos Laguna with a sublime header. The goal cut Santos' deficit against Chivas de Guadalajara to 2-1, and Gomez could have been the hero had he not missed a potential tying penalty kick in the waning moments of the match.

A third player got on his team's scoresheet this weekend as well. U.S. Under-23 men's national team midfielder Joe Corona scored his first goal of the Clausura campaign for Club Tijuana in their 1-1 draw with Toluca. Corona started and played 57 minutes in the game.

  1. Do you watch it is the question. How are my post stupid ? You all wanna bash Jozy and other players. But, when it comes to players like Bedoya and Ream you all act like they are on the same level as Ronaldo and Puyol. It is very laughable and you all are the ones that are misinformed not me. So please when Ream gets relegated to the bench, I will be back on here laughing at you all. I wish him all the best, but you all over rating him is not helping him. Rate him as the player he is and not rate him like he is John Terry or Puyol. -_____-

  3. Because they are over rated players.Wow, that is very hilarious you think just cause I do not like two US Players I am not American? So does this mean that Preston Zimmerman is not American neither ? Since he hates all the American players with duel US and German citizenship. Ives you choose like the weirdest players in the US pool to overrate. The only two players I bash are Ream and Bedoya. Their on people on here who bash every player in the US player pool. Bedoya barely played in the Gold cup he gave Dempsey passes, THAT STILL DID NOT LEAD TO ANY GOALS. Yeah, sounds like he had a great Gold Cup to me :D. Bedoya does not even dress for Rangers.
