Kenny Cooper opened his New York Red Bulls account on Tuesday, doing so against his former club in the process.

Cooper scored the opening goal in the Red Bulls' 2-0 preseason victory over FC Dallas in Cancun, Mexico, a game that was postponed from Monday because of field conditions. Acquired on the day of the MLS SuperDraft from Portland, Cooper, who played for Dallas from 2006-2009, started up top and finished off a feed from Dane Richards in the 33rd minute. Second-year forward Corey Hertzog converted from the penalty spot in the final minute to finish off the scoring.

Both sides trotted out first-choice-caliber lineups before switching to mainly reserves in the second half. FC Dallas had three shots hit the post, with Panamanian forward Blas Perez hitting the woodwork twice.

The two teams will meet in their regular season opener on March 11.

REDKNAPP AWAITS TAX EVASION VERDICT

The jury for Harry Redknapp's tax evasion trial deliberated for four hours on Tuesday before breaking without resolution.

Redknapp and former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric are being accused of fraud after allegedly not paying £187,000 in taxes and stashing money in offshore accounts.

The 12-person jury was warned by Judge Anthony Leonard to maintain neutrality despite the stature of the defendants, saying that, "Football is an emotive subject, stirring in an individual anything from deep passion to resentment. It has become so commercial that it may be thought by some to have lost its way. This case is not about football but about some allegations of tax fraud."

The group will resume deliberations on Wednesday

BLACKPOOL, MILLWALL ADVANCE IN FA CUP

A pair of English Premier League sides with Americans found out the identity of their FA Cup fifth round opponents on Tuesday, as Blackpool and Millwall each won their fourth-round replays to advance in the tournament.

Landon Donovan, Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann and Everton will host Blackpool following the Tangerines' 3-0 rout of Sheffield Wednesday. The two have a fifth-round date booked for Feb. 18.

Tim Ream and Bolton will travel to Millwall the same day for their matchup. Millwall came back in dramatic fashion to topple Southampton, 3-2, getting a stoppage-time winner from Liam Feeney to make it to the final 16.

FIFA DONATES TO EGYPTIAN FAMILIES

In the aftermath of the riots at a match in Port Said, Egypt, FIFA is donating $250,000 to families of the tragic event's victims.

"I stated after the tragedy that this day was a black day for football. I'm still very shocked by what happened. Many of the victims were so young," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in a statement. "They were also a crucial support for their families, who now need help. The football community, including FIFA, must assist its Egyptian brothers and sisters."

  1. Cooper had a bad season and still ended up being Portlands top goal scorer. If he can get good service which I think he can in NY Kenny is deadly. Just keep him away from defense as he cannot hold the ball. I wish him all the best. He’s a great guy.

  2. Using the Google, I can’t find anything prior to ’09, but I might have used another nickname.

“Perhaps, San Luis could be persuaded to part with the peripatetic Blas Perez. He’s good in the Mexican League, but I think he’d be even better in the more physical MLS.

Other possibilities — Panama’s talented young striker combo — problem children Gabriel Torres and Edwin Aguilar, both now in Colombia. Fabrice Noel looked good for Haiti, in the Gold Cup. Maybe, take a chance on Jamaica’s Roland Dean…”

“I love me some Blas Perez. Been my favorite non-US CONCACAF player for years.”

  3. Well, DC did defeat Vasco de Gama in the Inter-American Cup in 1998 — in a tournament that wasn’t just a pre-season exhibition.

  4. RBNY also disgraced themselves by bowing out of USOC last year to have less congestion in their schedule for your little tournament…

Props to the teams who go after EVERY title, no matter how large or small.

  5. Supposedly Schellas had tried to get him in his first year with FCD… We should have a good year with him coming in and the return of 2010 MVP David Ferreria, oh ya and that Brek kid too!

  6. I’m really glad that everyone is getting hyped up about the Galaxy and they are either ignoring or insulting RBNY. We don’t like any of you either. We had the spotlight on us last season and it was a distraction. Let L.A. deal with that BS. (Oh, by the way, RBNY remains the only club to win an international tournament in MLS without playing all the games at home or even in the USA. And we’ve done it twice.)

  7. Just wondering — According to MLS Rumor Central, NYRB have signed another Scandinavian — some Icelandic midfielder who managed to avoid being consumed by a volcano. This brings the number of foreigners on NYRB to 13. Ballouchy has a green card, if he hasn’t gotten citizenship yet, and I assume Richards does, too. Conde might also have US residency. So NYRB is using 10 or 11 slots. According to the wikipedia page, it’s believed that NYRB have 11 slots right now, including one from the original San Jose Earthquakes franchise, before they relocated to Houston, in the Ricardo Clark deal.

Seriously? 7 years later? I don’t even think MLS considers the Dynamo as the same team. Is it possible that NYRB still has their slot? Do they keep it forever, or just until Clark retires from the sport?

  8. Sorry if I am asking the obvious, but is Agudelo injured currently? Was surprised not to see him in any of the lineups for NYRB.

  9. Very early, but glad to see Cooper working well with a speedy forward like Dane. Depending on injuries and the like, we could see him pair up with Rodgers at times.
