Planning for summer friendlies is already in the works, and it appears that the New York Red Bulls will be welcoming one of the Premier League's top sides to Red Bull Arena for an exhibition.
According to the New York Post, the Red Bulls will play against Tottenham either July 31 or Aug. 1, and the game will reportedly be part of the season-ticket holders' package.
Tottenham is no stranger to Red Bull Arena, playing the Red Bulls in a friendly there in July, 2010. That game was Thierry Henry's first in a Red Bulls jersey, and he celebrated that debut with a goal. Current Los Angeles Galaxy striker Robbie Keane suited up in that match and scored for Spurs, who took the game by a 2-1 scoreline.
Led on the sideline by current English national team coach front-runner Harry Redknapp and on the field by American goalkeeper Brad Friedel and winger Gareth Bale, Tottenham could very well be preparing for the 2012-13 Premier League season along with UEFA Champions League play at the time of the proposed friendly, as the club currently sits eight points clear of missing out on Europe's top competition.
The date of the proposed friendly comes a week after the MLS All-Star Game, which is slated for close-by PPL Park in Pennsylvania. MLS has yet to announce the league's opposition for that match, but a team of Tottenham's stature with an American draw like Friedel would certainly make for an intriguing foe.
What do you think of the matchup? Think Tottenham would make for a good MLS All-Star Game opponent?

Actually the Red Bull had several sellouts last season. It was interesting to note that a lot of those tickets were from brokers who never actaully gave/resold to anyone :(.
+1
Maybe, but Bale might be in Barcelona by then…
All-star will be Chelsea or Bayern this year
Really, Henry to Spurs. Henry would rather kill himself than join Spurs
Guess your team’s not good enough to beat Spurs with Bale.
zzzzzzzz
Most MLS teams are on All-Star break right?
Thought you meant dirty Sanchez.
Mid-season friendlies are a joke and do not reflect well on MLS. They’re good for $$ but they interfere with real games and add to fixture congestion for no legitimate reason. Until and unless Tottenham would agree to play a friendly in London against RBNY in February, I’m opposed to the idea.
Agreed. I am not for mid-season friendlies UNLESS it’s Tottenham or Bayern Munich. Bring one of them to Seattle.
Spurs Chicago will be coming….getting to hate on RBNJ AND Henry at the same time while supporting Tottenham? YES!
Henry for Bale, straight up swap.
The last one was a competitve game. It will be interesting to see how much NY has closed the gap. Maybe new DP Ballack or Del Piero will be available for this one???
No, I would rather see a top tier German, French, Argentinian or Brazilian team or even a Mexican, Brazilian, Japanese or Australian All-Star Team.
‘m tired of the English and Spanish teams.
At least NYRB will get at least one sellout this season.
dumb comment
Yes
Yes!
Another bullet point in the discussion of why MLS regular season is largely irrelevant.
Wahoo!!!
For it.
great point. perhaps in a decade we won’t need so many of those or they will only occur in January/February
*dirty tackle
Hope Marquez takes Bale’s legs out with a dirty. Giving me only one reason in the world to like Marquez.
How about an East vs West format for the All-Star game!? I know I’m beating a dead horse here but we’re approaching twenty years here, it’s time to do a proper all-star game.
Bizzale
blah…how many mid-season friendlies will they have this season?
I hope they somehow make it out to the west coast too.
For Sho!
