Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

If Clarence Goodson is trying to keep himself in the conversation for a spot on the U.S. men's national team for this summer's World Cup qualifying, he did a good job of that this weekend.

Playing in his third game since Denmark's Superliga's winter break ended, Goodson scored the winner as Brondby IF knocked off FC Nordsjaelland, 2-1. The goal, which came on a headed effort, was Goodson's second of the season. The victory put Brondby seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Fabian Johnson also helped his team get on the scoresheet, drawing a penalty kick that was converted by a teammate in TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's 2-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart. Johnson drew the foul after making a run from deep on the left flank. He started and went 90 minutes in the match.

Another positive from this weekend was Alejandro Bedoya ending his spell on the bench for Rangers by starting and playing 83 minutes in the club's 2-1 loss to Dundee United. The match may not have been good from a team perspective, but it marked Bedoya's first appearance for Rangers since December 17.

What do you think of these performances? Impressed by Goodson's goal? Salivating at the thought of seeing Johnson make those type of runs for the U.S. men's national team this summer? Do you see Bedoya building on his performance?

  1. Bayern Munich, especially right now, make a lot of good players look bad.

If you dropped a USMNT player for looking bad against this version of Bayern you wouldn’t have a lot of players left.

  2. so what’s the deal with Hahnemann? Is he getting payed just to relax at Everton or is he moving come summer to MLS or another league?

  3. Most likely Fulham will finish probably 10th or 11th. Not bad considering they were fighting a relegation battle until around last Christmas. Chievo probably will finish mid table as well. Not bad since they’re such a small club.

any news on Gooch? I remember reading he’s out until summer. Had he stayed injury-free, I’ve a feeling he would have been his club’s player of the season. He defended superbly and scored quite a few goals.

  4. it’s amazing how many guys we have playing in Scandinavia. Some are former MLS guys, some are just joining from college. MLS should do more to promote the league there or sign agreements, perhaps we can loan players there and vice versa.

though of course the Danish league is much much better than the Norwegian/Swedish leagues but still

  5. Actually even though Fabian Johnson drew the penalty, he’s the one who didn’t have the strongest game for Hoffenheim. Johnson was partially responsible for both goals, I believe.

  6. Hertha Berlin are REALLY struggling, I think even giving up two penalty kicks and getting a yellow card won’t hurt his stock with them.

And heck, it’s Bayern Munich, the 6 goals is actually 1 less than they had against both their previous opponents, Basel in Champions League and Hoffenheim (both 7-1 victories).

  7. Maybe Danny Williams was the flop of the match in the Hoffenheim game, maybe he’ll get released for the Olympics too. Both of them looked bad against Bayern the past two weekends.

  8. Alfredo Morales…looks like Hertha Berlin WILL be releasing you for the Olympics. haha. For real! Sounds like a shocker of a game for him. He’s gonna be good, don’t get it twisted. But him playing bad for his club could get him made available for Gatt’s spot that just came open. He’d really help the Olympic team…he looked solid against Mexico.
