For two veteran Americans plying their trade in Mexico, this weekend saw them boost their chances of getting called in for the U.S. men's national team's friendlies and World Cup qualifiers this summer.

DaMarcus Beasley and Herculez Gomez scored in their team's respective games this weekend. Beasley rescued Puebla from defeat, netting the equalizer in the club's 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul. The goal, which came on a lunging left-footed effort, was Beasley's fourth of the season.

Gomez continued his run of games with a goal by capping the scoring with a beautiful header off a corner kick in Santos Laguna's 2-0 win against Queretaro. Gomez has now scored in six straight games across all competitions. He has eight goals during that stretch.

Two other Americans also found the back of the net. Michael Parkhurst scored his first goal in four years for FC Nordsjaelland, knocking in the winner in the club's 2-0 victory versus Horsens, while Josh Gatt scored a winner of his own in Molde FK's season-opening 2-1 triumph over Stromsgodset.

  1. Gatt goal. nice from him but utterly substandard defending. they just backed off till well into the box. No team in a top league does that.

  2. In My opinion Klingsmann should begin to phase Cherundolo out of the starting 11 for the National Team and start to phase Chandler into the starting Right Back. Useing Johnson on the Left & Chandler on the right will us the most dynamic attacking options, while maintaining a strong defense. Keep Dolo as a backup (saving his legs) for when/if Chandler is injured or has a bad game until another option develops. No need to use Chandler on the wing when we’ve got young talent waiting in the wings…(Left Mid: Donovan, Shea, Gyau, Diskerud, Adu; Right Mid: Donovan, Gatt, Bedoya, Adu, Corona, Gyau).

  3. Excepting the Canada result, and Morales’ benching, lots to be excited about this weekend:

Tons of goals, assists and good results

    Gatt’s unfortunate recall was justified

Clark & Cunningham went the full 90 for Stabaek after both rode pine for so long

Lichaj got PT, even if he did concede a late free kick that led to a goal

  4. Crowded by who? Danny Williams?

Landon’s been MIA for eight (EIGHT!?!) games.

Having played there in the past, Chandler would be a great option for the U.S. at RW, provided Fabian and Dolo are at LB and RB respectively.

  5. He also missed a couple gimmies according to an article I read, but it certainly seems like the offense functioned smoother in the 2d half with Jozy and he was creating chances.

  6. The AZ coach should be more concerned about the poor play of his wings, no assists in last 6 games, than Jozy, who has become their best passer in attack.

  7. Chandler looked strong at RW this weekend, coming up a bit unlucky with what could have been 2 assists within the first 10 minutes (one from each side of the attack). He also earned a number of corners and drew several fouls, though he did look VERY gassed down the stretch.

From the little that I’ve seen Fabian Johnson at LB, I’m not sure that’s where he’s best. He looks very comfortable going forward but his defensive positioning leaves a lot to be desired.

  8. Yeah I though the same thing when I saw that as well. Teh U-23’s could definitely use his destroyer mentality at CDM right now.

  9. Chandler has been playing winger for Nurnberg for the past couple of months and has looked great there. And his coaches at Nurnberg seem to think that is his best position. Do you think this is where Klinsmann will play him in the future? Dolo is still going strong at RB, and Johnson is playing LB for Hoffenheim. Would be interesting to see him play winger for the National team. I still want to see him played at RB.
Gatt looks awesome at RW as well. I really hope Klinsmann calls him up soon as well.
Players I want to see called up for the May friendlies/camp:
    GK: Howard, Rimando, Sean Johnson
Defense: Chandler, Dolo, Whitbread, Goodson, Boca, Onyewu, Ream, Castillo, F. Johnson
Middies: Gatt, Donovan, Bradley, D.Wiliams, Jones, Torres, Edu, Adu, Dempsey, Shea
FWDS: Altidore, Wooten, Gomez, Estrada, Sapong
Estrada is on fire for Seattle. He has a ton of pace, and will bring a very good work ethic to the striker position.

  10. Would love to see Gatt regularly crack the starting line up at Man U as well, but he would not be the first field player from the US to play for Man U. I know you mean a regular starter at Man U, which Spector was not, but I just want to give Spector credit where credit is due.

  11. all of his goals seem to be: receiving the ball somewhere in the middle third and taking it to the house. that is something we have never really seen from a young American in Europe. can’t wait to watch this kid develop into a star

  12. Herc’s header was fantastic. I don’t get those who say he can’t fit into JK’s system. He’s a goal scorer, plain and simple. He can fit into any system. If JK doesn’t call him in then there is something else going on.

I can’t help but hope that Gatt is on his way to Man Utd, With Ole as his mentor, and his rapid success, it would be great to see the first US field player make it at Man U.

  13. I am as excited about the younger American players as the next guy, recent results against canada notwithstanding. Nontheless, I am so very happy to see older players like Beasely and Gomez and Parkhurst playing well. Regardless of their future with USMNT, it’s great to see american players finding the top of their game (like Brad Friedel) I actually think all three players could still make important contributions to JKs squad and to “younger” players currently getting callups in similar positions: Beasely is the mobile with great ball control and pace and composure and experience, (and thus getting match results at a higher level then Mr. Shea), Parkhurst is an ideal distribution oriented CB with a tremendous football IQ that adds depth and would help give Time Ream a run for his money in competing for a spot behind Bocanegra, and Gomez simply scores goals, especially when a goal is sorely needed. Who can’t learn from that?

I don’t care what system you play, these characteristics are worth a callup when wins start to really matter and worth a callup so that younger players can see what’s what.

  15. So Alfredo Morales didn’t get released for qualifying but then his club didn’t even let him dress? That sucks for Morales and the US U-23s.

  16. Tim ream starts in yet another win for an epl side while the much heralded George John and Gonzalez stay in mls for good reason. When will Americans get it?

  17. I agree. He doesn’t really fit JK’s system if he goes with some variant of the 4-3-3 and the lone striker, but I can’t think of a better person to bring on as a late game sub if we need a goal.

Herc (from some recent twitter comments of his) seems to think his days with the national team are over though. Not sure if it’s just because he hasn’t been called up in over a year and half or if there are some internal messages/comments he received.

  18. Good stuff from Gatt, nice little shimmy before the shot. The thought of Gyau and Gatt marauding down the flanks in the very near future is awesome
