CONCACAF Champions League: Match Night Commentary

CCLLogo

Three MLS teams will continue their quests to become the first Major League Soccer club to win the CONCACAF Champions League title as the quarterfinals kick off tonight in Toronto and Seattle.

The defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy take on Toronto FC at Rogers Center as almost 50,000 TFC fans gather to cheer on the clear underdogs in the first leg of this all-MLS quarterfinal (8pm, Fox Soccer Channel).

In Seattle, the Sounders take on Mexican club Santos Laguna in the first leg of what is widely regarded as the toughest match-up of the quarterfinals (10pm, Fox Soccer Channel). American forward Herculez Gomez will be in the lineup for a dangerous Santos side coming off a 5-2 victory against Tecos.

The Sounders boast one of the strongest squads in MLS, and will mark the official Seattle debut for goalkeeper Michael Gspurning as well as Eddie Johnson, who is expected to see playing time after recovering from a hamstring injury.

SBI will be providing live commentary on tonight's matches so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

  1. Look like Monterrey, LA, and Settle are looking good going into their 2nd Legs.
Hopefully tomorrow’s game will be as intense as the 1st 3

  2. Sounders played very well – as if in midseason form. The additions looked very solid: Gspurning, Johanssen. (No Sivabaek though).

Terrific finish by Herc Gomez on the Santos goal. Classic goal scorers goal.

  3. Sounders 2-1. Santos was fortunate Ossie Alonso had such a poor game. If he can pick it up to his usual standards Seattle may go through.

Announcer thought Sounders had the Eddie Johnson from Portland. Don’t they have a producer/director listening in?

  4. Watching on a feed of Al-Jazeera +4 English, and the British announcer got every single thing about Eddie Johnson wrong. Not a Manchester United youth product. Did not play for Coventry. Was not with Portland last year. Apparently Johnson is a weird mix of Kenny Cooper and I don’t know what.

  5. Well they are going to debut that on Saturday for the Season and Home Opener vs RSL, and more important is that they are away, so why not use the really nice Dark Royal Blue away Uniforms that would contrast just as well with Toronto’s Red Jerseys?

  6. Where was Ecuadorian Intenrnational Caicedo?

He was supposed to shore up the middle for TFC. They could have used him in this one.

  7. Sounders on the board. Sublimely weighted ball by Freddy M to assist the header. DCU fan rootin for Seattle to rep MLS.
