The remarkable recovery of Fabrice Muamba took a significant step forward over the weekend with the news the Bolton midfielder was able to get out of bed.

According to a statement released by the London Chest Hospital, Muamba "continues to make encouraging progress in his recovery. Over the weekend he has been able to sit out of bed for a short time, watch television and has begun to eat. However, he will need to continue to be closely monitored by the medical team for some time."

Bolton manager Owen Coyle said Muamba was able to catch a portion of the "Match of the Day" highlights of Bolton's 2-1 win over Blackburn. Muamba still remains in serious but stable condition.

On the back of Muamba's collapse, FIFA has announced it will extend research into cardiac incidents in the game. The matter will be discussed at length during FIFA's medical conference in Budapest scheduled for late May.

Here are some more stories to keep you Monday going.

ONE DEAD, THREE INJURED IN BRAZIL FAN VIOLENCE

A 21-year-old supporter was shot to death during clashes between Corinthians and Palmeiras supporters ahead of their game on Sunday. Three more supporters were admitted to the hospital with serious injuries while an additional three were treated and then released.

Andre Alves was among a group of Palmeiras that were attacked with lead pipes, wood and rocks by a group of Corinthians supporters. The violence included a reported 500 fans and had to be dispersed using tear gas and rubber bullets. Four people have been arrested in connection with the violence but the police have not said if they are suspects in Alves' death.

This is the second death of a young Brazilian fan within two years. In November of 2010, a 19-year-old fan was killed in southeastern Brazil.

BAYERN SIGNS SCHWEINSTEIGER'S BROTHER TO SECOND-STRING TEAM

Bayern Munich have announced the signing of Bastian Schweinsteiger's brother, 30-year-old Tobias Schweinsteiger, to their second-string team. The elder Schweinsteiger had been playing for Jahn Regensburg in Germany's third division and led the team with 12 goals.

Since Munich's second-string team plays in the fourth tier of the German league, it is unlikely the brothers will play with or against each other in a competitive match.

LENNON CHARGED WITH MISCONDUCT

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has been charged with misconduct after being sent off during halftime of Sunday's Old Firm between Celtic and Rangers.

After confronting referee Calum Murray in the tunnel during halftime, Lennon was ordered to the stands for the second half but instead watched it from the media room. Lennon called the sending off "a joke." A hearing on the matter will be convened on April 19.

  1. Any person who can come back to life after literally being dead for 78 minutes is a true badass. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Fabrice Muamba!

Too bad about the 21 year old in Brazil. It’s sad that this is such a big issue in an otherwise amazing country. Violence is definitely a big concern leading up to 2014, but I’ll still plan on being there.
