MLS Week 3: Your Running Commentary

MLS Logo

The third week of the MLS season may already be underway, but there are still plenty of matches worth watching on Saturday afternoon.

The arguably biggest game of the day will take place at Toyota Park, where the winless Philadelphia Union will try and bounce back versus the Chicago Fire in a battle of Eastern Conference team. Another match that holds intrigue is D.C. United's visit to Vancouver. The Whitecaps are undefeated through two games, and they will look to keep their record perfect when they take on a D.C. United side that is still searching for its first win of the year.

Here are today's MLS matches:

4 p.m. – MLS Live/Direct Kick – Columbus Crew vs. Montreal Impact

  1. Columbus get a goal from ‘new guy brought in to score goals’ Olman Vargas on a powerful header, 2-0 over MTL in the 67th.

  2. Portland have their first real look at goal in ages, but Boyd puts his header wide. He’s been misfiring all day, although Joseph probably deserves some credit for that.

  3. Nguyen jukes right through 2 Portland defenders and into the box for a shot, but it’s saved well for a corner. Revs owning this game, Portland are creating nothing, still 1-0 58th

  4. The last 25 mins of the 1st half were much better, and it’s a good start to the 2nd half. There is enough shaky play that I wouldn’t use this game to try and prove MLS is a great league, but I’m still watching.

  5. Rowe gets past the Portland keeper, but he can’t keep his dribble together and it goes out for a goal kick. Timbers having a lot of trouble building any attack. Nguyen and Sene are the most dangerous players on the field. Almost halftime.

  6. Doesn’t help that of the two other DPs Koevermans looks like he’s been chugging Heineken and eating Edam all off-season while De Guzman is back to his old form after a good year in 2011

  7. I don’t know which was worse last week, Seattle losing 6-1 or Toronto winning. I’m no band wagon jumper, but I would have liked to see the Galaxy get into the Club World Cup. They were built for it. Toronto is getting blown out by Santos.

  8. Very boring game in NE. Revs are a mess with Feilhaber out and Joseph playing CB. I hope they get healthy enough to play both those 2 with Nguyen in the midfield. Not sure why Portland can’t put anything together, this game is reinforcing many bad MLS stereotypes.

  9. So true. I was at the Sounders game and TFC was not the same team after he left the pitch. TFC lacks any defensive spine without Frings

  10. With Frings out TFC don’t have a leader on the field and the defence is totally exposed. I’ll just be happy if we stay ahead of the Impact until he comes back

  11. San Jose looked good today. Wondo looking like he wants that golden boot, should have had a hat trick. Toronto leaving the field looking like a team that is going be devoured by Santos Laguna.
