Rapids sign one-time U.S. forward Hill

Kamani Hill is coming back to the United States.

The Colorado Rapids signed the one-time U.S. national team forward on Wednesday, adding him to a forward stable that is already set to get Conor Casey back from injury in the coming weeks.

Sources told SBI that the Rapids acquired Hill through a lottery — they were the only participants — and as a result, the club is prohibited from taking part in any other player lotteries this season, though the club did not specify that in its official announcement. Vancouver is also in that position after winning a lottery for Lee Nguyen.

Hill, 26, was training with the Rapids for the last two weeks and was most recently with Vitoria SC in Portugal. After a standout career at UCLA he landed a deal in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg in 2006 before moving to Portugal in 2009. The California native appeared in games for the U.S. national team in 2007 in friendlies against China and Sweden while at the height of his career but struggled to find consistency overseas.

  1. Thats seems to be the M.O. of most American players that go to Europe. High potential, but never really break through besides a few. Sal Zizo, Danny Zsetela, Freddy Adu, Kemani Hill, Kenny Cooper, and the list goes on about failed American players in Europe. At least Adu is still young enough to take another shot at it somwhere in the future.

  2. i guess that makes sense. but since we measure international players by their number of caps, “one-time” seems like a weird choice of weirds. just me being anal (and in a bad mood over the u-23 loss).

  3. Dude. He has been playing with New England since the start fo the season. Acquired like the day after he was let go at Vancouver.

  4. What is the word on Nguyen? Vancouver has let him go, right? Not sure. If yes, has he been picked up elsewhere or is there a trade in the works?

  6. one-time means “at one time in the past.” It is a proper choice of words, despite the fact that he was capped twice during that time period, and really shouldn’t have caused much confusion.

  7. I agree with the distinction, it’s like some local lawyer who was appointed to finish the last few months of a retiring judge’s term forever calling themselves “Judge X” in their TV ads. With the exception of someone like Brad Friedel who excelled for us but then decided to retire from international play, it’s a tad loose to say guys like Hill, White, or Nguyen are really internationals.

I’ll be interested what he offers. On the basis of U20 play he once was someone to discuss but he’s now like a Gale A.-type who’s burned years of playing time bouncing around or even being unattached. Has he played since 2010? Three pro goals, who knows what they are getting.
