Liverpool, Roma to meet at Fenway Park

Boston-based European club owners will have their teams go head-to-head at one of the United States' most storied stadiums this summer.

After plenty of rumors and speculation, Liverpool officially announced that they will play AS Roma in a summer friendly at Fenway Park this July. The exhibition will be a rematch of the 1984 European Cup final, which was won by Liverpool in penalties. Current Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish and former New England Revolution coach Steve Nicol suited up for the Reds that day.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool is slated to play "at least one other competitive match" during its North American tour. That match, however, will not be the MLS All-Star Game, as the clash with Roma takes place on July 25, the same day as the MLS mid-summer exhibition.

The meeting of the two clubs in Boston seemed inevitable, as Liverpool, owned by Fenway Sports Group founder John Henry and chairman Tom Werner, and Roma, owned by Thomas DiBenedetto are both linked with their ownership ties to Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox.

Intrigued by the friendly? Hope to see your MLS team play Liverpool? Disappointed the match is the same day as the MLS All-Star Game?

  2. Celtic/Sporting played in Fenway in 2010 without any issues – one goal near the third base dugout and the other out in right field.

  3. I live in san diego and we’d gladly take the Revs, the crew, any friendly or any MLS all-star game. Those of you who are lucky to have a franchise in your home city should be thankful.

  4. Let’s hope this doesn’t turn into the equivalent of the fiasco at Wrigley Field. Illinois and Northwestern played American football in a stadium where you could only use half of the field. Hopefully, they really look at the field configurations before dozens of European players refuse to play in dangerous conditions.

  5. lolol………good one.

i hope LFC sells Suarez and makes a move for dempsey. it sounds far fetched, but that would help me to hate them not as much.

  6. Good to see soccer in the city of Boston. My guess is SUM made this a priority to pave the way for a Revs move.

Just a guess, but I’d expect Liverpool vs. Tottenham in Baltimore, 3 days later — in what might be an FA Cup final rematch. Will be quite a day in the Baltimore-DC area, with Chelsea playing Milan on the same day in Landover, Md.

  7. Get rid of the All Star game , please! Do not zombify MLS in the vein of NFL, NBA, etc. what a stupid stupid meaningless game this is.

Bet, then, Garber is a NFL protege and he will continue to tell you who to cheer for, how to cheer, when to get “loud”, who gets “promoted” and other such things…

  8. A meaningless friendly that is all about making lots of money while getting in shape for THEIR seasons…

I made the mistake of going to see RSL vs Real Madrid and was disappointed for the money I paid….never again…
