SBI MLS Player of the Week: David Estrada

In three years in MLS, David Estrada had never scored a single goal in MLS play.

On Saturday, he took a major step toward making up for that drought, scoring a hat-trick to help Seattle post a 3-1 victory against Toronto FC. A performance that made Estrada the easy choice for SBI MLS Player of the Week.

Estrada beat out a field of Player of the Week contenders that included Sporting KC striker Kei Kamara, Seattle teammate Alvaro Fernandez and Real Salt Lake's Fabian Espindola.

What did you think of Estrada being named Player of the Week? An easy call, or did you think someone else deserved it this week?

  1. He featured for the US as an U-18, but never for a senior squad and therefore isn’t country-tied. He looks great and I love his hunger to go at defenders and take chances on goal but I’m sure it’s too early to give him a call up to the USMNT, especially at a high forward position that is usually commandeered by Altidore or Agudelo. Would be great to see if he could inject some pace into the squad though.

  2. Good choice by Sigi, as he has no fit striker willing to play high. Fernandez and Estrada combined well. Both Rosales and Alonso were strong. Montero is not up to speed yet.

  3. Estrada was VERY impressive when he was UCLA, I was surprised that he left so early and also surprised that he didn’t have an impact in MLS sooner.

    Good for him.

  4. I thought he was gone last year. Seemed like Sigi hated him, just no minutes. I am glad to see his hard work paying off. He almost eclipsed Fucito in 1 game vs all of last year. Seems to me, he has the finishing that Fucito lacked. Same speed, same endurance, but can make runs better and nail it home.

  5. He’s been a depth guy for the last two-years. He always had potential but it was a question of whether he would realize it.

He worked harder than everyone else in the off-season. He came in in shape, immediately started putting in more miles than anyone else on the pitch and out-hustled everybody.

Add that in with his off-ball running becoming 3x more dangerous and his confidence increasing and you have more and more Sounders fans believing that the trade of Fucito was not to clear a spot in the starting 11 for Johnson.

  6. Estrada has always shown well but not spectacular and has been moved around the field playing first as a wide midfielder, then central midfield and then last year as a defender. This year Sigi decided to give him a try back at forward where he was very seccessful as a college freshman. I think he is happy to be back at forward as he has now scored 4 goals in 3 games.

  7. He has always been a huge potential guy….He led UCLA in scoring as a freshman. I know that many would like you to believe their US Open Cups are because they care more, but they were very deep.

  8. Is David Estrada a young player coming on? I know he was an original draft pick of the Sounders two years or so ago, but was he just on this game or has he shown well in cup/league matches last year? Thanks.
