Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Two teams coming off a pair of emotional victories square off in a high-profile English Premier League match on Saturday as newly-crowned Carling Cup champion Liverpool faces Arsenal.

The Gunners come in riding high off last week's emphatic 5-2 victory against arch-rival Tottenham, while Liverpool enters off a penalty shootout victory in the Carling Cup Final. Arsenal will be looking to post an important road win to maintain their hold on fourth place in the Premier League, while Liverpool looks for a vital three points to move closer to climbing out of seventh place.

American fans still riding high off the U.S. national team's upset win against Italy will be interested to watch Juventus take on Chievo, as Michael Bradley looks to build on his outstanding showing against Italy with another good match against Juve star Andrea Pirlo.

In Mexico, Santos Laguna takes on San Luis in their final match before their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal vs. Seattle. The match should feature American striker Herculez Gomez in a starting role for Santos.

  1. Williams who plays centerback for his club lined up in midfield for the US.

Boca would line up in midfield for Fulham every once in a while.

    It’s a pretty standard tactic.

  2. Man, hater mcpolo needs to grow up. I’m shocked a hater would hate on something that happens every time a call is made.

  3. Lol when have teammates NOT ever put on displays in front of refs when somebody on their team gets a red card, regardless of circumstance?…hell players put on theatrics when they get called offsides, did you see Kuyt today?

  4. That’s okay with me then. I think those comments from Verbeek from a few weeks ago have been answered pretty well. Atta boy Josmer.

  5. great day for the usmnt! 8 players getting playing time in the big 4 leagues today: Howard, Whitbread, Ream, Jones, Dolo, Morales, Wooten, and Bradley. Matt Taylor scored a brace down in the 2 Bundesliga for Paderborn, which has a serious shot at promotion next year. Bradley was outstanding for Chievo today.

    things are looking up!

  6. Man, Jozy needs to grow the hell up. I’m shocked he wasn’t carded for that display he put on. Your player stops a goal with his hand, gets red carded, and your first reaction is to run to the ref and wave your arms around in his face?

    Dude, come on.

  7. Bradley has turned a corner in his game. His distribution has improved dramatically and he’s a lot less reckless than he was a few years ago. Tactically sound and still a fearless tackler. Hail to General Bradley.

  8. I didn’t really see and the game was in Dutch, but it definitely wasn’t Benschop. AZ was down a man and there was about 20 minutes left so probably an extra mid fielder.

  9. Definitely lookng like it. Reminds me a bit of USA-Italy, in that this is no luck – it’s deserved. I’m a Juve fan, so I’m not ecstatic about it, but I love seeing Bradley so dominant.

  10. I dont think ive seen Bradley make a single error this whole game. I thought he had, but he was putting the ball out of play because a player was down on the pitch.

  11. Yeah, that tackle was excellent; he has been all over the place today. This is the best that I have seen him for Chievo.

The equalizer was well deserved. Chievo tends to play very conservatively but that definitely hasn’t been the case today. Even before they were down 1-0, they were attacking with numbers.

  12. Chievo playing pretty capable right now and Michael Bradley has been playing well and had a beautiful open field tackle! and while I’m typin this they score!!!!!

  13. I think I understand where Jozy gets his sense of drama. You’d swear these AZ players are getting pepper sprayed after every challenge the way they are rolling around on the ground.

  14. AZ player gets red carded for stopping goal with his hand – and there’s Altidore with arms waving in the face of the ref. I get the feeling this is what the AZ coach doesn’t like about Altidore.

  15. JOZY.

2 more seasons in the Eredivisie will do him so good and get him ready for the WC. Imagine a 2014 WC with Jozy scoring 2 or even 3 goals. Imagine how a big Italian or French club goes to buy him and he is a solid striker on a big team in a top 4 EURO league and everyone is happy.

    you never know

  16. Strong first half from MB – he’s playing with a lot of confidence and Chievo is playing much more aggressive/open than usual.

  17. dude you’re right. SOUTH KOREA was the gem of Asia, now it’s Japan. Both are great footballing nations with loads of talent.

I think we should schedule 2 friendlies with both Japan and SKorea like in summer or maybe winter. Play near a military base and give the proceeds to the troops. wouldn’t hurt to play a few games in ASIA.

  18. Our best strikers in USMNT were Wynalda and McBride. if Jozy can score consistently for his club/s and for the NT during our tournaments, he could become the BEST ever for us

  19. Altidore with AZ score – exactly like the USMNT team goal, except this time he doesn’t lay it off to Dempsey – he takes it himself and scores.

  20. Jozy waves his arms complaining about the wingers service. Not a good idea to show up your team-mates unless your Henry.
