Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Juventus may be the only unbeaten team in European soccer, but a rash of draws coupled with AC Milan's red-hot form has left the Turin club trailing in the race for the Serie A title.

Juve is currently seven points behind Milan, but can close that gap back up to four with a win today against Inter Milan. The struggling Italian powerhouse is in dire need of three points to help revive the team's chances of qualifying for Europe next season.

If you are looking for some international intrigue, turn to Brazil, where rivals Corinthians and Palmeiras do battle today in the Derby Paulista.

CONCACAF Olympic qualifying resumes today, with Mexico taking on Honduras in a match-up that will very likely decide who the United States faces in the tournament semifinals (assuming the United States beats El Salvador on Monday to advance).

  1. Some great keeping on display in the first half of Juve/Inter. Both Buffon & Julio Cesar are on their game today.

Halftime featuring some terrible dancing by some rather attractive ladies (ESPN3 feed where there’s no studio analysis at half).

  2. Good win for Newcastle, 3-1 over West Brom. Cisse with two goals, Ben Arfa with a good goal and involved on both Cisse’s goals. Tied with Chelsea on points (but way behind on goal difference.

Worried about Coloccini and Cisse, both of them had to come off with injuries.

  3. Really good goal yesterday. I turned the game on randomly, just in time to see it. Didn’t even realize it was him until I heard the announcer say Gomez, and even then it didn’t click right away.

  4. Thinkl Ives tweeted last night but just in case, HERCULEZ scored an impressive (sick perhaps-?) header for Santos yesterday. He deserves to get a few games in given his form and variety of goals – just knows how to support build up and create space from what I’ve seen.

Ives’ please get the link up… my bad if I missed it here 🙂

  5. Though to comment on my comment, at least if you’re going to watch a league where only two teams have any shot at winning, and said teams have a history of violence and politics getting mixed in (though admittedly less violence IIRC), why not La Liga?

  6. I saw the exact same match with equal quality down at the fields by weekend warriors on Sunday afternoon last week.

In other words, the entire SPL is hot garbage and gets far too much credit for tradition that is long expired.

  7. I agree; this was the first time I watched an Old Firm. This was one of the fastest games (especially the first half) I have ever seen. It certainly lived up to its traditions and history!

  8. Yeah – marred an otherwise very nice performance by MB. He had the nice corner that resulted in Chievo’s goal. Too bad they’ll remember that bad back pass….
