The immediate future of the U.S. men's national team is consumed with Olympic qualifying, but the wave of players in the pipeline behind them are getting to work as well.

New U.S. Under-18 coach Javier Perez has called in 35 players for his first training camp since taking over at the helm a little more than a month ago, with a heavy Development Academy presence being a theme on the roster. The week-long camp will take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., from March 25-April 1.

Among the players taking part in the camp are 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup participants Mobi Fehr, Alejandro Guido, Paul Arriola, Esteban Rodriguez, Dillon Serna and Matt Dunn. Andrew Oliver, the United States' leading scorer in U-17 World Cup qualifying, will also take part in the camp, fresh off a training stint with the Under-20 national team where he was joined by Fehr, Dunn and Guido.

Two Stoke City youth players will compete at the camp as well, with midfielder Kristian Scott and youth goalkeeper Ethan Horvath making the trip.

Here is the 35-man roster for the U-18 camp:

  1. “Matt Dunn (OFK Belgrade, Serbia; Dallas, Texas)”

How does a non-Slavic 17 year old kid from Dallas end up playing for a mid-table Serbian team?

  2. It’s pretty hard to figure out the method to what they’re doing with these call-ins. My best guess is that they don’t want players bouncing between age groups.

As mentioned below, Flores is a U17, will be eligible for the 2013 U17 World Cup, so he won’t get a call up. Likewise, the two guys you mentioned (and McBean mentioned below) have been with the U20s of late, so I take it the coaches want to keep them there.

There of course a few exceptions (Esteban, Dunn, Fehr, Oliver) which is where things get confusing.

  3. Mobi Fehr is Swiss and though he may have signed with Basel, US Soccer often just goes with the club the player is training at.

  4. No Jack Mcbean? We must be stacked at forward. Not saying hes a world changer but he is a solid youth prospect who is a pro. Hard to believe he wouldn’t be in the top 35.

  5. Mobi Fehr (Basel FC, Switzerland; Tokyo, Japan)

Is this new news? I thought Mobi Fehr was with a club in Tokyo… nice to have another young American moving to a quality European team.
