Chivas USA rally for comeback win in Portland

The Portland Timbers looked well on their way to another victory at Jeld-Wen Field when they pounced on a defensive blunder by Chivas USA and took a 16th minute lead at home on Saturday night.

Chivas USA had other ideas, and a second-half rally not only gave the Goats another road victory. It also made them the second visiting team in as many games at Jeld-Wen to pull off a late victory in Portland.

Second-half substitute Ryan Smith delivered a pair of beautiful crosses that Alejandro Moreno and Nick LaBrocca headed him in the 48th and 82nd minute to give Chivas USA the 2-1 victory on Saturday night.

Just three minutes after coming into the match, Smith sent a cross into the penalty area, where Moreno beat Eric Brunner to tie the score and negate an early Kris Boyd goal that came after a collision between teammates Dan Kennedy and James Riley led to a gift of a chance for the Scottish striker.

Portland controlled possession for long stretches, but never could mount the kind of attacking pressure that would yield a go-ahead coach, which left the door open for LaBrocca's late header.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with Chivas USA's ability to rally? Starting to wonder what is wrong with the Timbers?

  1. Agreed. I think the Timbers right back thinks he’s Maicon, but he’s actually Lovel Palmer.

As for left back, the Timbers owner should be flying down to Mexico and get on his hands and knees begging Bornstein to come back to MLS (especially since he’s not playing much down there). Bornstein might not have cut it as a starter for USA, but he’d fit in very nicely for Portland right about now.

  2. Good call, read around a little and that seems to be the picture . . . tons of talent but hasn’t had the consistency, otherwise he is gifted enough to be more well known and established especially in this league. Made the two goal setups look very easy though. We will see I guess.

  3. arsenal pedigree, a bit of a head case. never put it all together consistently for SKC, but did have flashes of brilliance and a few golazo’s. mls needs more like him coming from europe and south america (maybe with less baggage)

  4. “Starting to wonder what is wrong with the Timbers?” Starting? No. Any Timbers follower with a brain has know for a while. It’s the fullbacks, stupid.

  5. What is the scouting report on Ryan Smith? He created the 2 Chivas goals, I only saw highlights but he looked lethal on the flank, especially on a narrow field
