Fire sign Nyarko to new deal

One of the Chicago Fire's more integral players is not going anywhere.

The Fire re-signed speedy attacker Patrick Nyarko on Thursday, locking up the Ghanaian to a new deal, the terms of which were not disclosed by the club. With 19 assists in the last two seasons, Nyarko has been instrumental to Chicago's attack, using his pace to go at defenders while playing consistent provider for fellow Ghanaian Dominic Oduro.

"Keeping Patrick with the Fire was a big goal of ours over the last year,” Fire head coach Frank Klopas said in a club release. "With his speed and ability to change pace, he’s shown to be one of the most threatening attackers in MLS over the last few years and is key to our attack."

Happy to see Nyarko staying put? Where do you rank him among MLS attacking players?

  1. Of two minds on this. He often reminds me of his present strike partner, Oduro, in terms of speed and skill, good and bad. Oduro had a surprising amount of assists, also, when he was here in Houston.

But when you look at where the Fire sit in the table, and their relative position in the league in recent years, and how the East is actually pretty soft…one does wonder if status quo will be enough.

  2. I’m a Fire fan, but I didn’t realize quite how many assists he had over the past two seasons. He’s taking more shots now, which he rarely scores on, but it should make him more of a worry to opposing defenses.

No indication in the Fire’s release as to the length of time of the contract.
