When Mexico and Honduras square off on Monday in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying final, there will be little to play for other than bragging rights.

Both teams will represent CONCACAF in this summer's Olympics after securing berths to the competition in London this past Saturday. Honduras defeated El Salvador 3-2 in extratime in the first semifinals match, while Mexico topped Canada, 3-1, in regulation.

Now, Mexico and Honduras will meet at Livestrong Sporting Park on Monday night to close out a tournament that has had its share of surprises. Honduras will look to avenge a 3-0 loss to Mexico in group play, while El Tri will try and finish the tournament undefeated.

Possible roster spots and pride may be up for grabs, but no one is likely to get be too upset with the result. Not after advancing to the Summer Gamers this past weekend.

What do you think of Mexico and Honduras advancing to the Olympics? Think they will represent CONCACAF well?

  1. Mexico might get to quearterfinals. Honduras will be lucky to end up with a point.

The difference is too big: Brazil, Spain, UK and Uruguay will easily be the final 4.

  2. Honduras isn’t as strong as the majority of teams to play in Olympics, but they aren’t new to the event having qualified twice recently. I doubt they will make an impact but I don’t think they will disgrace themselves either. At the last Olympics (2008) they lost 3-0 to Italy, and 1-0 to Cameroon and South Korea. Not memorable, but didn’t make fools of themselves. Fairly admirable for a small poor country.

  4. The fact that the US couldn’t make the semis from the easiest group in qualifying just plain hurts. This post just kinda adds salt to the wound…

  5. All US fans care about is the fact that Porter and his selection massively failed and now it’s on to WCQ for Klinsmann. Regional representation by other countries means nothing.

  6. Maybe you should double check your sources.

The 2005 U17 WC was played in Peru.
The 2011 U20 WC was played in Colombia. Mexico finished third.

The last time Mexico hosted the Olympic Qualifiers, they won the tournament and knocked the US out in the semis.

  8. Mexican fans shouldn’t get too confident. If you look at Mexican soccer history they got to the World Cup quarterfinals twice playing at home, won the Confederations Cup at home, won the U-17, U-20 at home. Have they gotten out of the second round in any tournament outside of Mexico?

  9. The only down side I see for El Tri in London, is the occasional reckless play. CONCACAF often gives them that benefit, but that won’t be the case in England.

  11. Mexico has a shot to represent the region well. Honduras…..is another issue. At least we, the USA, only made a fool of ourselves here and not the Olympics

  12. Mexico has a very good team. Their team speed and fitness appears to be better than everyone else. Where other teams complain about the tough schedule, their players were still all-out attacking in the 90th minute. It seems that every player on El Tri has the confidence and fitness to go one on one, which is quite entertaining. I believe they’ll represent Mexico and the region very well in the Olympics.
