MLS Week 5: Your Running Commentary

MLS Logo

A pair of rivalries, one in Canada and one in the Rocky Mountains, headline today's MLS action as Week 5 kicks off with seven matches on the schedule.

Toronto FC have made the short trip to Montreal to take on the Impact at Olympic Stadium in the first meeting of these Canadian rivals as MLS foes. Neither team has won a match this season so there should be even more intensity in this derby as two teams desperate for points square off.

The Rocky Mountain Cup resumes tonight with Real Salt Lake taking on the Colorado Rapids in a battle of 3-1 teams. RSL are coming off a thrilling comeback win against Portland, while Colorado posted an impressive 2-0 victory against the Chicago Fire in Week 4.

The match of the day will be taking place at Livestrong Sporting Park, where Sporting Kansas City will take on the struggling Los Angeles Galaxy. David Beckham is out for LA, but Landon Donovan is back and will look to help the Galaxy snap out of an early-season funk.

  1. Looking forward to SJ-Vancouver today. I think the Quakes come away 2-0 winners. The VAN defense is well-organized but don’t believe their midfield can stand up to the Quakes right now.

  2. Thanks, ec, I think I’ll be purchasing it pronto. Sounds awesome. I do miss when MLS would show their games online live for free if they weren’t on tv. That was in 2005-2006 or so. But still this seems better cuz MORE games now and better quality. Woot.

  3. I just use lap top, but love the live game access. You get most of them, and the quality is way better than streams. People I’ve talked to say it’s just as good on the iPad. The other thing that is very underrated is being able to watch condensed match replays, they do a good job of editing the match down to 15-20 mins, enough to really give you a sense of the teams if you want more than highlights.

  4. +1 Exactly. I do think the atmosphere comes off poorly at Olympic Stadium, but I’m trusting that it will rock out at the new one. I would bet that it will be a Portland-type scenario over a Chivas one.

  5. I just want to say I am so effing happy MLS is back in full swing! My favorite league in my favorite time of the year. I truly love MLS.

I have a question for anyone who has the MLS live for mobile devices and iPad. How is it? Worth the $50 or whatever it is? Thanks

  6. you could seriously not be more wrong. The Impact averaged over 10k in the minors(in SEA/POR territory), have an owner who has already said the team will and has gone after expensive DP’s like Anelka, Ballack, etc., will within a few months be playing at a great stadium in the downtown district, has an appeal internationally to francophone players that no other city in MLS could have, in general plays in an incredible city that is desirable to tons of people, doesn’t have any other Summer competition, has already had amazing attendance figures above 50,000 in the minors and this year, and more. I have no idea why you assert there is a ‘lack of buzz’, that could be no further from the truth. And while you are perfectly entitled to think that Jesse Marsch is a terrible coach, somebody who was an assistant coach on a group-winning, round of 16 World Cup team who has tons of MLS experience is not a poor enough choice to label them a bad market. Moreover, good/bad expansions are determined by ownership groups/markets, not things that constantly change like coaches/gm’s.

  7. The guy who owns MOI is a billionaire and the city is a medium-big market with no other serious summer sports competition.

  8. “Columbus, Dallas, Colorado, and Chicago are half full most of the time”

Or they were on average (60, 60, 82 and 73% full, respectively, in 2011. Depending on whether you want to look at the real data or not.

  9. I look at FO decisions – lack of marketing, lack of deep pockets investors, hiring Jesse Marsch, etc. All other expansion efforts had way more buzz, excitement, momentum this early on.

  10. What warning signs? I mean we have teams who have been in the league longer with worst issues. DC has no stadium, Columbus, Dallas, Colorado, and Chicago are half full most of the time. So lets let Montreal get to that first then panic lol.

  11. Actually, I agree. I mean I hadn’t really thought about it, except about the colors being the same old green and blue, but those lines are pretty fat and that ball design is old, to boot. I suspect you could get a significantly better result keeping the same basic design but cleaning it up and making it sharper and leaner, so that it looks less like something put together in the initial days of the Internet and more like something for the 20teens.

  12. You now have posted twice that RSL is 3-1 (and coming off a thrilling win at Portland). You do know they played Wednesday and won and are 4-1, right?

  13. Why Montreal its been 4 games in? Chivas i would agree but your jumping the gun on Montreal. What are your reasons anyway?
