Saunders PK save salvages win for Galaxy

The Los Angeles Galaxy looked like they had a win in the bag in Colorado when they took a 2-0 lead on the Rapids heading into the second half, but an Omar Cummings wonder goal and a 90th minute penalty call threatened the Galaxy's first road win of the season.

That's before Josh Saunders stepped up and saved a Cummings penalty, canceling out a highly-questionable penalty call against David Junior Lopes and handing the Galaxy a 2-1 victory at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The Galaxy opened the scoring courtesy of a Marvell Wynne own goal before Donovan scored his second goal in as many games in the 39th minute. The Galaxy's second straight win looked to be in safe hands before Cummings unleashed a beautiful goal to pull the Rapids to within a goal. When Lopes was called for a foul on Andre Akpan in the penalty area, the Rapids looked to have a complete in hand. Cummings couldn't produce the equalizer though, hitting a weak penalty that Saunders saved easily.

The win improved the Galaxy's record to 3-3, and dropped the Rapids to 3-4.

What did you think of the match? Starting to believe the Galaxy are rounding into form? Puzzled by the Rapids winless streak, or do you see Colorado having problems the rest of the year?

  1. Most defenders have difficulty with Cummings. He is a great player.

As for Barrett, I hope to never see him play again. He is awful. LA needs to find a legitimate 3rd option.

  2. I saw on Saturday why Lopes will never fill OG’s shoes: he has the size, but lacks speed. You’re right about the match up with Cummings. It was uneven to say the least, but Lopes did well enough to keep his huge frame between Cummings and the goal.

  3. “How is there no mention of the atrocious call to give Colorado a PK in the first place?!”

Well the article does refer to it as “a highly-questionable penalty call”…

  4. as good as Lopes was last week he was not last night, particular trouble with the Cummings matchup and on more than just the goal, which was awesome

LD had sweet touches throughout the game and the Galaxy MFs in general, but Buddle has yet to include himself. Would rather see Barrett until this changes

  5. How is there no mention of the atrocious call to give Colorado a PK in the first place?! On the replay, it was clear that Lopes hardly touched Akpan, and that Akpan launched himself toward to ball to try for goal.

No dive by Akpan, no shove by Lopes. Ref almost completely changed the outcome of an otherwise entertaining game.

There was no penalty on Wynne. He did end up getting his head on the ball only just enough for it to be redirected slightly for an own goal, though.

  7. LA played good enough and won a game that they should have tied. Donovan’s goal should have been saved, and the PK should have scored. Champion teams win games like that. That is why they play with the Silver Ball in LA. I do think the Rapids are better than their record though.
