One of the biggest surprises of the young MLS season has been the play of the San Jose Earthquakes, who moved into a tie for first place in the Western Conference with their recent 1-0 win against the Seattle Sounders.

San Jose's impressive 3-1 start has been due in part to the standout performances of a handful of players who have played some of the best soccer in the league, a reason why the Earthquakes boast a league-high three selections on SBI's MLS Best XI for March.

Chris Wondolowski, Victor Bernardez and Sam Cronin all made the cut as our picks among the league's best in March. Unbeaten Sporting KC boast two selections while 3-1 Real Salt Lake also have two players on the squad.

Here is SBI's MLS Best XI of the Month of March:

  1. Unfortunately Benny is listed as OUT on today’s injury report. From what I understand a peroneal strain is a strain and swelling around the ankle and I know the last thing the media has gotten from him was that he is in a walking boot. If anyone knows anything more than that I’d love to hear it.

  2. My only real concern for the Quakes D is staying healthy this season. If they do this team has a real chance to make some noise again.

  3. Wondo, Kamara, and who?

I think its silly to kick ourselves for Wondo. Completely came out of nowhere. Always thought letting Kamara go was strange. What have we done with that allocation money? The opportunity to take a chance on Landin and Koke? Meh.

  4. Yeah the Quakes D is solid. Against Seattle, Corrales got hurt and they brought in Hernandez, who is usually a starter. You also have Ike Opara on the bench. Bernardez has been solid, good signing.

  5. Ives, I am confused by your team formation….. That Formation would be killed in my opinion.

(SBI-Do you really not get that the team formation is pretty irrelevant? The point of this is to pick out the best players of the past month, not build a fake team for some fake game. Thought that was pretty self-explanatory.

And I say that in the nicest way possible, with a smile on my face.)

  6. Finally Dan Kennedy goal keeper for Chivas USA gets a little bit of recognition.

    National team call up next?
He can’t be any worse than Hamid & Johnson for 3rd string position behind Howard & Guzan.

  7. Joseph has been playing great, but unfortunately for the Revs he’s been logging too many minutes at CB covering for injuries. I really want to see the full NE midfield with Feilhaber, Joseph, and Lee Nguyen – who should be honorable mention at least, he always looks like one of the best players on the field.

What is the update with Feilhaber? Revs have him listed with a “peroneal strain”. I have no idea what that is.

  8. I can’t believe he didn’t get picked up by another euro team… he is wrecking fools here, what a steal by San Jose

  9. How can you not have CJ Sapong on either the first team, second team, or HM? I think he has been much important for SPK than Kei, not that Kei has not been playing well too.

  10. Not saying your wrong, but am interested in hearing your justification for Kei over CJ.

(SBI-Sunday’s game was technically in April. If that game was in March, you’d definitely have a better argument of Sapong over Kamara. That being the case, I went with Kamara.)

  11. No Estrada…..Really?

(SBI-First, CCL games don’t count for our considerations. Secondly, his season has consisted of one HUGE game, one game where he scored a deflected goal, and that’s pretty much it. Even that was enough to get him mentioned, but not going to make the first team based on that.)
