Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

If a day filled with match-ups of top teams from leagues all over the world is your cup of tea, then today is the kind of day you dream about.

Top match-ups in Italy, France, Spain, Scotland and the Netherlands headline today's slate, starting with the Old Firm Derby. Celtic has locked up the league title, but the Glasgow rivalry is no less intense and Rangers will surely want to end the year on a positive note.

In Spain, Real Madrid will look to shake off Champions League disappointment with a win that would move them to the brink of a La Liga title. Sevilla won't make things easy for Real Madrid, not with their Europa League aspirations hanging in the balance.

In Italy, Udinese and Lazio square off in a battle of teams with Champions League aspirations. Lazio currently sits in third place in Serie A, but Udinese could leapfrog them with a victory.

In France, Paris St. Germain takes on defending champion Lille needing a win to stay within striking distance of surprising Ligue 1 leaders Montpelier. In the Eredivisie, FC Twente is in sixth place, but just a point out of second place, but beating first-place Ajax won't be easy. The Amsterdam squad can essentially clinch the league title with a victory.

  1. Ha. Sparky made a massive miscalculation thinking that there would be instantly greener pastures after dumping Fulham for not having enough ambition to suit him.

/At least i THOUGHT I remember him saying that.

  2. watching the Tijuana-Pumas match and gotta say, Edgar Castillo is very impressive at left wing. His first-touch and ball-handling skills are excellent and he is threading some wonderful passes. Looks totally confident out there, not at all the jittery bunch of nerves like last autumn at left back for the USMNT. Joe Corona not seeing the ball as much as Castillo, but also looks good.

  3. Anybody want to talk about D.C. United’s awesome win over houston, the first time they have won back to back games in almost three years? Ahem, SBI, ahem. You covered all the Saturday MLS games but DCU!

  4. Too many crap matches at the end of season featuring one or two teams with players whose brains already at the golf course.

  5. Terrible weekend for yanks for the most part. No goals or assists, right? Jozy probably not going to qualify for the CL, Rangers lose Old Firm. Timmy played well and we do have 3 teams in the Mexican playoffs though.

  6. Man tomorrow is gonna be great. I love that the title is at least up for debate and man city has made it interesting. I don’t particularly like Man City but I’m tired of ManUtd winning the title so I suppose I am pulling for Blue Moon by default

  7. They are not even assured of Europa at this point. Heerenven and Twente play each other next week so AZ would want a draw in that one. It’s going to be close.

OR, AZ wins twice, PSV stumbles in one game, and Feyenord lose AT Heerenven in the last week. It could happen. 🙂

  8. So the Dutch situation is so dense at the top. 2nd thru 6th are really all 1 game apart. Eindhoven wins today and jumps temporarily to second. Twente is down 1-0 to Ajax and the AZ-Feyenoord are 0-0. What a week

  9. potentially the biggest Yank Abroad match of the year tonight between AZ and Feyenoord. Tied in points at 61, sitting in 2nd and 3rd place, but three more teams are within 1 point… classic finish for the Dutch league this year in the battle for Champions League spots.
