Tainio set to miss 4-6 weeks with knee injury, Conde to miss Columbus match

The New York Red Bulls midfield suffered a tough blow today amid word that Teemu Tainio will miss four to six weeks with a knee injury suffered in training on Thursday.

Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe revealed the details of Tainio's absence on Friday, while also stating that standout defender Wilman Conde will also miss Saturday's match vs. the Columbus Crew.

The absence of those key figures for the Red Bulls will make winning against 2-1 Columbus that much tougher. Tainio was key to the Red Bulls 5-2 win against Montreal, while Conde has been New York's best defender by a wide margin. Their absences will likely mean a central midfield pairing of Rafa Marquez and Dax McCarty, and a centerback tandem of Markus Holgersson and Stephen Keel.

  1. He hasn’t been one of the best defensive mids in the league since early last season. He’s adequate, but he’s not even a starter if everyone is healthy.

Conde is the bigger loss. Keel is serviceable, but Keel and Holgersson together is a pretty weak CB pairing. Rafa will have to sit deep.

  2. Oh well…now we are down to 3 defensive midfielders. I don’t think the loss of Tainio is big as the loss of Conde at this point. I must be one of the few Red Bulls fans who thinks the team is better without Tainio. His dangerous challenges put the team at risk of losing a man every match he plays.

  3. And there goes the season. Or at least the next 6 games. Classic NYRB. Just when you get two games of momentum, BAM! Why no details on Conde’s injury or expected return?
