This Weekend’s Soccer on TV (and SBI’s Top Ten Matches to Watch)

Two teams in desperate need of a victory square off with very different goals in mind as Manchester City takes on Arsenal in the weekend's marquee match-up.

Manchester City has seen their Premier League title hopes fade fast in the midst of a strong Manchester United surge, and if the Citizens want to keep those hopes alive, they must find a way to win at the Emirates. For Arsenal, last week's loss to Queens Park Rangers has pulled the Gunners back into a tie for third place with Tottenham, making Sunday's match vs. City a vital one to avoid falling behind Spurs again.

In Italy, Lazio and Napoli currently occupy the third and fourth spots in Serie A, and with Udinese and Roma hot on their trails for those spots, neither team can afford to drop points when the sides meet in Rome. The match should be an emotional one for Lazio as it will be the first match at the Stadio Olimpico since the passing of Lazio legend Giorgio Chinaglia.

In Spain, Real Madrid is still comfortably in first place, but a loss to third-place Valencia could suddenly make things very uncomfortable atop the La Liga standings, especially with Barcelona coming on strong, and especially with another edition of 'El Clasico' looming.

Here is a rundown of this weekend's soccer on TV, as well as SBI's Top Ten Matches to Watch:

SBI'S TOP TEN MATCHES TO WATCH

1. Arsenal vs. Manchester City. Two of the top three teams in England square off. Must-See TV.

2. Lazio vs. Napoli. Two teams fighting for third place in Serie A. Throw in what should be an emotional day for Lazio fans after Giorgio Chinaglia's recent passing and there will be plenty of drama in Rome.

3. Real Madrid vs. Valencia. Real Madrid has looked outstanding, but Valencia just might be able to knock them off.

4. Sporting KC vs. LA Galaxy. The Galaxy may be struggling, but this will still be a must-watch for every MLS fan. Can KC rip apart the Galaxy's shaky defense? Can Landon Donovan help turn things around for LA?

5. Schalke vs. Hannover 96. Jermaine Jones faces off vs. Steve Cherundolo in a battle of teams vying to keep hold of their current European Cup places in the Bundesliga standings.

6. Bolton vs. Fulham. Tim Ream and the Trotters will try to slow down red-hot Clint Dempsey.

7. Real Salt Lake vs. Colorado Rapids. Rocky Mountain rivalry features two teams currently atop the Western Conference standings in MLS.

8. Chivas Guadalajara vs. Club America. The biggest derby in Mexico should provide plenty of entertainment.

9. Sporting Braga vs. FC Porto. Seperated by three points atop the Portuguese standings, this one will be worth the effort of tracking down.

10. Paris St. Germain vs. Marseille. Fierce French rivalry should provide an intense match and some good goals.

  1. I had the same question about the new Univision channel, and it appears that Univision Deportes Network is NOT blacked out on MLS Live.

At least, MLS’s TV listings for the week do not list it as blacked out; I can’t check, though, as it’s blacked out online for me due to the local MSG broadcast.

  2. Trying to catch the Red Bulls vs Columbus today from Florida but I don’t have that new Univision Sports Network and my direct kick through my local cable subscriber doesn’t show it as being broadcasted. Anybody even know if the online MLS live will even show it since its actually being broadcasted on this Univision sports network that’s not available in all areas? Anybody think I can get an online stream?

  3. Threre should probably be at least three categories. Soccer on cable tv channels that normal people have. Soccer on subscription cable channels that only soccer nerds pay for. Stuff you can stream on the interweb while your friends wonder what happenend to you.

  4. Hope Deuce adds to his tally, but Bolton needs the W and the points more.

Fingers crossed for 3-2 Bolton victory, with Ream not at fault on either goal and maybe an assist or hockey assist.

  5. It would be nice if you listed the FOXSOCCER and FOXSOCCER PLUS afternoon games (i.e., the 10 AM games that they show after the 12:30 game). I’d much rather watch on my flatscreen TV than my laptop. Even if you just added a parenthetical (e.g., 5 PM Fox Soccer Plus)

  6. LA’s weaknesses are matched pretty well with SKC’s strengths. With Donovan and Beckham, I’d predict a 2-1 SKC victory.

Without either of them, SKC will win 3-0.
