The Portland Timbers have been in search for upgrades at the fullback positions, and the club addressed that need on Wednesday.
The Timbers signed Scottish left back Steven Smith — Timbers forward Kris Boyd's former teammate at Rangers — adding another option out wide defensively for coach John Spencer. Smith, 26, had been on trial with the club following his departure from Preston North End, where he played 15 games this season. His other career stops include Aberdeen and Norwich City after six seasons with Rangers.
While Smith, who was a free agent and therefore not bound by the closed transfer window, joins the club, the Timbers also announced that they waived midfielder James Marcelin for "non-soccer-related" reasons.

Next best LB when he debuted at Rangers, before a major hip injury threatened his career. Good going forward, strong, sometimes rashly so, in tackles. When healthy (which…is going to be the major question mark) he could be one of the better left backs in the league, but he’s not really had a fully healthy season since his hip injury.
I know little about Smith other than what the PR says-Anyone have any info?
Gavin Wilkinson said “James was waived for non-soccer-related reasons… This organization has a high level of professional expectations for all its players.” Way to leave us hanging, man.
I liked Marcelin…I wonder what he did? Good news about the signing though.
