The Philadelphia Union took advantage of the final few hours of the transfer window being open, as they bolstered their attacking depth by signing a player with European experience.

Philadelphia acquired German midfielder/foward Kai Herdling on loan from German Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, the Union announced on Monday. Herdling will add another attacking option for Peter Nowak on a team that already boasts the likes of Freddy Adu and Danny Mwanga.

Herdling, 27, spent much of this season with the Hoffenheim reserves. He scored nine goals, assisted on 14 others and spent some time as captain for Hoffenheim II before joining the Union.

What do you think of the Union getting Herdling? Do you see him making an impact?

  1. Totally agree. The lineup from last Sunday will most likely not be replicated for months it’s tough to develop chemistry with other players when you’re constantly adjusting to a new position and role week in and week out.

  2. Where did you get this info? Dortmund plays with a single striker and currently lewandowski and barrios are above him. However both have been linked with transfers in the past and Klopp has spoken highly of Boyd. I see no reason for boyd to leave the future bundesliga champions for the mls.

  3. No one is even claiming those two will be anything special, all we want is for them to get a fair run of games. Nowak jerks players like Mwanga around, starting him, pulling him after 60 minutes, benching him for 3 games, starting him again in a different formation with a different strike partner, and et cetera.
He gave Le Toux a guaranteed start + 90 minutes every game last year, even though he literally went half the season before scoring his first goal. He has done the same thing with Pajoy so far. Is is that hard for him to name Mwanga our second striker, give him a fair run of 4-5 games, then judge him then? You know, actually give him a chance to develop chemistry and mesh with his teammates?
Nowak plays musical chairs with this offense, and it’s really unfair to judge our young strikers so far when Nowak caoches like this.

  4. What, based on their results so far in actual MLS games, makes anyone think guys like Jack McInerney are any good? Heck even Mwanga hasn’t done anything impressive in a long time. Just being young with some potential doesn’t mean talented, and it definitely doesn’t mean good/successful.

  5. 27 is not young. If Nowak got rid of Le Toux because of a youth movement, then why was this player added? With the talent they have, the Union should be a team that is fighting for first in the east with SKC.

  6. I’m sure it’s just Nowak’s way of keeping Adu out of the lineup. He just needed a good excuse so he went out and signed one ha. In all seriousness though, I don’t care about the Union at all so hopefully he isn’t gonna take time from Freddy or any other US players.

  7. Well, by comparison, the away jerseys are now amazing.

Honestly, though, I don’t think there’s any way to salvage the horrible Where’s Waldo look. The away kits would actually look good with WHITE shorts.

  8. Yeah, reminds me of a vertical Chivas USA jersey.

But, if they put stars on their shorts (assuming those are blue), they will be like huge walking american flags. Can I get a U-S-A?!

  9. that would have been great. too bad MLS would not allow that. he would have to go thru an allocation draft and have an option to buy, 2 things Hoffenheim would never do! dumbest rule ever.

Good work by Philly to get a good player tho.

  10. I would tend to agree but Saer Sene, from the Revs, was in the same boat playing for the Bayern Munich reserves. I don’t think anyone would dispute his contribution to NE thus far. He’s been a pleasant surprise. Just glancing at wiki, it appears Herdling has been with the reserves lately but a few seasons ago he was on the 1st team hoffenheim squad that played in the 2nd and 3rd Budesliga before their promotion. It’s a wait and see with Herdling, I’m sure, but I wouldn’t count him out yet.

  11. The loan gives Philly the option to extend his stay throught December.

One of my biggest complaints about MLS is that the rules currently in place prevent Americans playing abroad from having loan opportunities in MLS. It would be nice if Terrence Boyd had an opportunity to like this, but Borrusia Dortmund would have to be willing to sell him afterwards if an MLS team wanted to to sign him on a loan deal. What a messed up rule.

  12. I agree. Nowak should actually settle on a actual striker rotation like a normal coach instead of playing musical chairs, and then signing another striker on a loan so he can have one more chair in his game.

  13. Can’t really see him making much of an impact. He’s on loan until when? June 30th?

I’d rather see more opportunities given to Mwanga and Jack Mcinerney.
